In other news, Cesar Izturis was traded to Pittsburgh for a PTBNL.

Talk about a fall from grace. He hasn't hit anything in three years.

There's some stats there that need some improvement. His walks are low, but then again his Ks are low, too, and his AVG is high. I'd rather have a guy like him hit than walk anyday. He's hitting .455 with a man on first and .600 with a man on second in July. Pretty good, when you consider that more often than not, that man is Furcal.

Bottom line is he's having a pretty decent month so far, offensively. I think he's doing what the team wants him to do. He's still got a noodle arm, but goddammit he's contributing, even though he's not worthy of the super-star contract he's got.

I've always been a big fan of Juan Pierre, and I think he contributes in a lot of postive ways that are not reflected in the stats. Sure, he has a below average arm in center, but that will be less glaring when Ethier and Kemp are flanking him next year. Gonzo's limited range and below average arm only serve to compound JP's deficiencies

As for his contract...I've said it before. "Over-paying" for a player is a part of today's game. After this off season, Juan Pierre's deal will probably look like a bargain. And "over-paying" for a player only bothers me if the Dodgers then use that as a reason as to why that can't sign someone else...like we're already hearing out of San Francisco that they won't sign A-Rod because they already have too much wrapped up in Zito.

Tell me honestly that you'd rather see him in the lineup than Kemp or Ethier. Really.

I guarantee you Juan Pierre will never look like a bargain at $9mil/year.

And as noted above, we have two great young outfielders who cost 1/23rd (1/23rd!!!!!) of what Pierre costs, and it's not like there aren't places where that money would be useful.

The payroll is already up some $30 million from two years ago. Unless McCourt plans on bumping it up another $30 million, that's $9 million a year wasted until 2011.

But hey, Jay-Z did rap about the guy. So... yeah.

We must be really desperate to praise Pierre to salute three good weeks after three terrible months. Yes he's having a good July, but even a blind squirrel finds a nut every now and then.

Take an everyday spot from one of Kemp/Ethier, and money we could use elsewhere?

What's funny is 5yr/45mil isn't even a superstar contract anymore... the times they are a-changin'.

I'm starting to think we really only disagreed about Depodesta. Since he got axed we've been in alignment on a lot of things. What the **** is up with that?

9 mil a year that could be put towards a good CF like Hunter or A. Jones. I would have rather the Dodgers signed Gonzo for 3 years instead of Pierre for 5. I'll go further than saying it is a waste of money giving him 9 mil/yr. He actually make the team worse because it prevents Either or Kemp from playing. Dude is getting paid to hold the Dodgers back.
