Phillies just dealt for Iguchi. Arguably the best 2B out there which is a position the Padres are looking to upgrade.

Not that I don't like Lowell, but where would he play? With Nomar playing very well defensively at 3rd and starting to hit again, I don't think there's any need for a third baseman unless Betemit goes in the deal. And even then, why platoon two right-hitting third basemen? Not only that, but he's an OLD MAN!!

It gets worse, apparently that bullpen arm might be Tavarez...

I've heard some talk now that LaRoche probably wouldn't be involved in such a deal, and that instead LAD would send young pitching to Texas along with young pitchers from the Red Sox for Boston to get Teix. In return LAD would get Lowell and bullpen help (I'd guess Tavarez, he can start or take any bullpen role short of setup and closer, with Lowe recently having an MRI flexible pitching might become the real priority need of the Dodgers).

I don't think we would get any bullpen help from the Red Sox, but I think Gagne coming back to LA is a possibility.

I don't want to give up any talent for a rental player, even if it is Gagne.

Tavarez is a starter.

That Lowell deal just doesn't make much sense.

Randy Johnson to have season-ending (might as well be career-ending) surgery.

Also, Indians get Kenny Lofton. Man, Ned let a good one go. Comparing Lofton & Pierre's stats - they're not too different. A 1 year deal for Lofton would have taken us a long way and put us in the running for a GOOD CF free agent.

Padres get Hairston. Not much of an upgrade over Giles. Higher ceiling but I'm not worried about it.

Correct me if I am wrong but I thought Tavarez got demoted to the bullpen by the Bosox?

Today is Betemit's birthday, and ESPN has been running best birthday plays or something all day so hopefully Betemit fills in for somebody in the game and knocks out a home run.
