Putting this thread and disaster of a season to bed... back to hockey. Thank GOD.

I'm not going to lie. It hurts and it hurts a lot. Grady Little has until game 50 of next season to prove to me that he can lead this team into the NL elite. If he can't do it we need to bring in someone who can.

Colletti better do something huge this offseason to improve our offense. Juan Pierre's 2nd half numbers will make him attractive to some team in search of a lead off hitter. I say deal his ass for bullpen help and throw real cash at Andruw Jones. Andruw is 30 years old and he has a career SLG% of .498. He's twice the defender JP is and Jones actually has a major league OF arm.

    Something needs to be done.

My heart sank a little bit in class when i checked the scores from the night game. Wasn't expecting to see Saito lose.
Hopefully next year we'll have all the youngsters playing and even though they might struggle a bit i'd rather see them playing and developing then putting the ever aging Gonzo-type player in place of them. The Dodgers have a good future ahead of them and I hope the management lets that develop. Pierre in my opinion isn't going anywhere since no one will touch his remaining four years of his contract unless we pay for more than half of it. Hopefully Kent comes back as he might be the only "veteran" leader on the field. Grady is signed up through next year so i dont see him getting fired.
Maybe the Dodgers will learn from the Dbacks and find out that its not so bad to play a bunch of inexperienced young players as in the long run it usually should pay off.

Finally, it's over. The Dodgers have been prolonging the inevitable for weeks now. Now I can stick to watching football and the kings. I actually feel relieved.

The Dodgers will be fine next year. Although we are seeing why Red Sox fans did not like Grady Little, his management style is too tentative. Alternating Ethier and Kemp was not right. He should have started Kemp over Ethier and have Ethier and Gonzalez platoon. I never thought playing the percentages was a way to play, righty vs lefty and vice-versa except when it comes to the pitching. Having Loney sit in Las Vegas the first part of the season was not wise either. I know Martin wants to catch every day but in the long run catching too much will ruin his knees. His numbers went down as the season progressed (well, he is dating Alyssa Milano and the same things happened to Penny when he dated her). We need a homerun bat next year and it should be either a 3rd baseman or an outfielder.

Here’s what I think they should have next year:

    1B James Loney
2B Jeff Kent (if Kent retires, Abreu or Garciaparra)
    SS Rafael Furcal
3B Free Agent/trade or platoon LaRoche and Garciaparra
    RF Matt Kemp
    CF Juan Pierre
LF Andre Ethier or Free Agent/trade (trade bait would be Ethier)
C Russell Martin, resign Mike Leiberthal
    P Jason Schmidt
    P Brad Penny
    P Derek Lowe
    P Chad Billingsly
    P Free Agent/trade
    BP Joe Beimal
BP Yancy Brazoban (should be recovered)
    BP Long relief, not Lurch
    BP Jonathan Broxton
    BP Takashi Saito

Not to mention we have others at Las Vegas and Jacksonville that could come up…

Well, Saito failed us. Time for him to do the honorable thing so he does not bring any further shame on his family name.

I'm sorry, but I just don't understand this.

Who could have done a better job with a team that had a debilitated starting rotation from before the midpoint of the season?

I'm chalking this season up to piss-poor luck. Again.

I'm pretty confident that, with a healthy (and properly constructed) club, Grady can do a fine job. Firing him is definitely not the answer at this juncture.

Now, if we're able to make significant waves in the free-agent or trade markets to get what this club needs in the off season and we end up sucking hind-tit at the end of next year, ask me again.

I think this team is on the precipice of greatness. It's not the right time to begin firing people.

With Loaiza more than likely coming back to us next season, I see him as the fifth starter. Yes, he sucks. But it appears we may be stuck with him. The only other thing (and maybe a better idea) to do with him would be to use him as a long reliever and re-sign Wolf for one more year. The reason I wouldn't mind seeing this are two-fold: 1) local boy who wants to be a Dodger, and 2) Lefty who can pitch pretty damned well when he's not hurt.

Brazoban is a lost cause, IMO.

Sign a long-reliever. Give Hendrickson his walking papers. Give Proctor a little more rest between outings.

Re-sign Lieberthal and give him more of the load to bear in order to better preserve Martin for the post season.

Solidify our third-base options. I still think Nomar has a bit of fight in him, but I don't see playing him every day. Unless we can work a (don't-hold-your-breath) blockbuster for A-Rod (something that would cure our need for a big bat AND an everyday third-baseman), I think the only thing to do is to platoon there.

Start Kemp and Ethier. Keep Gonzo for the occasional start to rest our kids/left-handed PH/defensive replacement role. I also believe he's a great influence in the clubhouse.

Next year will be much better.
