I never said he was a good hitter. In fact I was using him as an example to better fit your all glove-no stick description. I liked him better in the 8 spot because the expectations are lower, just clear the pitcher's spot and don't be an automatic out.

Your numbers make sense because when he improved from being horrible they moved him up in the lineup. Remember how bad our 2003 team was overall offensively. But didn't Lo Duca hit #2 most of the time before the 2004 deadline?

Again, he was on the field because he probably saved as many runs with his glove as he didn't produce with his bat. No way Gagne saves 84 straight games without Beltre, Izzy and Cora behind him for most of them.

I own "Document" and "Life's Rich Pageant." I sold back all their other CDs....they didn't age very well.

And as I noted, he was exactly what you didn't want him to be: an automatic out. A .287 OBP in the 8 spot? That's about as much of an automatic out as you can be.

You've got it backwards. He was, for lack of a better word, ****ty in the 8 spot. He got moved up to the top of the lineup and actually started hitting, though I would attribute this more to him getting older and more experienced than his spot in the lineup which really isn't that big of a deal.

How bad our 2003 team was overall offensively does not excuse Izturis's terrible hitting... in fact he very strongly contributed to it.

He hit 2nd and 5th mostly (and then 3rd mostly with the Marlins). When Izturis was batting first, he'd hit second. When Roberts batted first, Izturis would hit second, and Lo Duca would hit fifth.

Depends on what you're comparing him to. The difference between a good hitter and a poor hitter is much larger than a great fielding shortstop versus an average fielding shortstop.

And don't misread my saying "average" fielding shortstop as having a negative connotation. The average fielding shortstop in the bigs is a pretty good fielder, but when you're talking about value I want to know what a guy brings to the table versus his MLB average equivalent. That's how you judge how replaceable and valuable a guy is.

Well sure, but it goes both ways. I'm not talking about milestone streaks; I'm talking about over the long haul.

I bet he would've had a lot more save opportunities with better hitters than Izturis and Cora in the lineup too.
