That entire team sans Kent and Lowe was on the DL for most of the year and had $30 million less of payroll on it.

The injuries this year are nowhere near as bad as they were in 2005.

It's not even a close comparison, more like night and day.
DePodesta took over and had to cut the payroll from $100 million to $80 million.

Colletti took over and boosted the payroll from $80 million to $110 million.

    So yes, night and day.

I'm not getting into the whole thing again, but let's not comapre this year to 2005 as if it's the same thing just because it's the second year of the GM's tenure. This year's team isn't nearly as injured or nearly as bad as 2005 and the proof is in the standings. Guys get hurt every year, if you're a GM for a living you should account for that.

This wasn't much of a surprise.

The Padres, attempting to fortify their pitching staff for the September stretch drive, have signed right-hander Brett Tomko to serve as a long reliever and possible spot starter.

Tomko, 34, was designated for assignment by the Dodgers when Los Angeles signed left-hander David Wells, who had been released by the Padres.

Tomko was 2-11 with a 5.80 ERA with the Dodgers, but experienced relative success with the Padres in 2002, going 10-10 with a 4.49 ERA.

The Padres tried to acquire Blue Jays right-hander Josh Towers in a trade before last Friday's deadline for setting postseason rosters, but the deal never came to fruition.

And Padres fans were laughing at us for signing Wells?

Haha, that's great. Couldn't have gone to a better place. If we offered Tomko for Wells in a trade last month, I wonder if SD would have done it? Probably not.

Man...Wrigley's so freakin' cool. I need to get back there. Maybe I'll go see a game there again next season.
