Saito Adds Nasty Curve
Catcher Russell Martin took swings against closer Takashi Saito for the first time during a throwing session in which Martin buckled on a curveball before homering to the opposite field on a fastball.
Martin called the curveball "nasty" and could imagine Saito using it to start off hitters rather than his fastball-slider combination.
Then again ...
"You don't want to change something that's not broken," Martin said.
The same might be said as an explanation for Martin's feelings about getting more rest this season, which didn't change much even after Torre spoke to him about getting one day off a week.
"He sort of didn't respond to it," Torre said, smiling. "He was respectful, like, "What do I tell this guy?' "
