Dodgers' Kemp Gets Tips from Master | Sports | Baseball | PE.com | Southern California News | News for Inland Southern California

    Saito Adds Nasty Curve

Catcher Russell Martin took swings against closer Takashi Saito for the first time during a throwing session in which Martin buckled on a curveball before homering to the opposite field on a fastball.

Martin called the curveball "nasty" and could imagine Saito using it to start off hitters rather than his fastball-slider combination.

    Then again ...

"You don't want to change something that's not broken," Martin said.

The same might be said as an explanation for Martin's feelings about getting more rest this season, which didn't change much even after Torre spoke to him about getting one day off a week.

"He sort of didn't respond to it," Torre said, smiling. "He was respectful, like, "What do I tell this guy?' "

Jason Repko homered today, and he cited time spent in the batting cages using an alternative method to get him ready. His father threw him batting practice at 88-95 MPH, but before you think about signing Ed Repko, Jr., it turns out his father started up something called Time Right Batting Systems (he's trying to get it patented, but the Web site doesn't load). Repko's 54-year-old father sells books teaching pitchers of any velocity to throw BP at any rate of speed relative to the distance. So while dad usually throws 52 MPH from a regular distances, he's able to instantly calculate the distance he needs to throw from to get it up fto 88-95. So at Marvin Benard's house in Washington state, Repko would face live pitching every day. More on this in tomorrow's paper.

UPDATE: Forgot to mention the humorous part of this conversation. Repko used an example of a reporter throwing only 40 MPH, and the reporter began to balk at the projected velocity. Juan Pierre, criticized for his arm strength, jumped in with impeccable timing, noting. "Now you see how it feels."
    Repko mother****ers!

Juan you throw like a girl
