Default Mark "The Bird" Fidrych, we hardly knew ye

Fidrych killed in accident - Extra Bases - Red Sox blog

Mark Fidrych, a Northborough native whose aw-shucks charm and on-the-mound antics helped make him a national phenomenon as a Detroit Tigers rookie pitcher in 1976, was killed in an accident in his hometown this afternoon while working on his pickup truck. He was 54.
Having spent most of my summers as a kid up at my grandparents' place in Jackson, MI, I fondly recall watching the antics of The Bird when he came into the league. My condolences to his family and friends.

I was reading an article about old-timers who bemoaned the lack of character players in the league nowadays. The Bird was mentioned as an example. I have not been too familiar with him and most anyone else up til the 1980's, but the story was pretty entertaining.

then I continued to surf the news links and this announcement of Fidrych's death popped up. such a sad sad day.

    The Bird, may you RIP.
