Well that's it for playoff hopes. Howie strikes out in the 9th with Bourjos on 1st. Texas wins, 4-3 to put the Angels out of Wild Card contention.
As for next year, they need to do a small amount of shopping. Weaver, Haren and Santana are their big 3 starters. #4/#5 are always up in the air but between Williams, Chatwood and Pineiro or whomever they might acquire in the winter they should be fine for the rotation. I was pleasantly surprised that Callaspo came on this year, quietly flirting with a .300 average. A few hits in the remaining two games and he could finish in the low .290's. Wells was a disappointment and I'm sure he's aware of it, but I suspect he'll be much better next year, I just can't fathom a guy like him tanking after the success he had in TO. Torii is something of a question mark as far as whether he'll retire or come back. He's already said he won't go to another team. Bobby Abreu might be done but who knows.
I'd really like to see the Angels go after a catcher who can hit at least .220 and not strike out so much. Everyone always goes on about how Mathis is a great positional catcher but he's not so good that I'm satisfied with him hitting .180-something every dang year. Hell, even if he put the ball into play and moved his runners up I'd be happy but he strikes out or pops up way too much.
