Logan White might be interested in something other than pitching prospects at the upcoming draft.

With a good number of pitching prospects already in the pipeline, wonder which direction he'll go? Infielder with power?

Sarf and I have been on the Aaron Hicks bandwagon. He's a toolsy high school outfielder. He's a two way player but I think we need an injection of talent as far as our position players go.

We could definitely use some position players in the system, particularly down the middle.

Down the middle was what I was talking about.

But someone else brought the possibility of converting one of our young 3rd basemen to play second. The way DeWitt is playing at the moment, that might be the best option for immediate talent at the major league level once Kent leaves.

DeWitt did start out as a 2nd baseman, but I think there's a reason they converted him despite the presence of LaRoche above him in the third base prospect pecking order (at the time).

    BA Chat Wrap

mike (san diego): Were you impressed with Kershaw's debut against a not too shabby Cardinal's lineup? Also, over/under 15 starts for him this year.

SportsNation Jim Callis: I was impressed. I'll take the over -- Kershaw still can smooth out his command, but his stuff is good enough to allow him to win in the majors now.
Chris (NJ): Does Scherzer's head jerk make him a long-term health risk? Scherzer or Kershaw?

SportsNation Jim Callis: Yes, it does. Kershaw.

mike (SD): better kershaw question: Kershaw or Joba?

    SportsNation Jim Callis: Kershaw.
    Jake (FL): Kershaw or Price?

    SportsNation Jim Callis: Kershaw.
    Steve (Kansas): Kershaw = Hamels?

SportsNation Jim Callis: Kershaw > Hamels.
Louie (Tampa): What puts Kershaw over Joba in your mind? The pure stuff? Or the fact that he's a lefty?

SportsNation Jim Callis: Comparable pure stuff, done it longer in pro ball as a starter, he's a lefty. That's all nitpicking, which is what you have to do to separate two studs like that.

Phil (Grand Rapids): Kershaw or Bruce if you are starting a team?

    SportsNation Jim Callis: Bruce.

SportsNation Jim Callis: I'm all Kershawed and Bruced out . . . back to the draft work. See you next week--the day before the draft!

Callis needs to put up a disclaimer: Kershaw > all pitchers.

Draft is tomorrow, and the guy I wanted doesn't seem like he might fall to us. There were ton of mocks that had us taking Aaron Hicks, then he decided to start throwing 96 and his stock slightly went up. The A's or Twins might nab Hicks. :(

The thing is though, is that there are reports that Hicks refuses to sign as a pitcher, which is what the As/Twins want him as. Still probably a long shot that he falls but that might help us out.

Saw an interesting pick for the Dodgers from Keith Law's projection. He had us taking a college relief pitcher...

    15. Los Angeles -- Andrew Cashner, RHP, TCU

If the Twins take Collier, the Dodgers could turn right around and take Hicks, and there's still a chance they could take Collier if he is available. I was as surprised as anyone to hear the Dodgers were looking at college relievers, but Cashner and Schlereth apparently are in play, perhaps a reflection of the shortage of polished, high-ceiling high school players in this draft. They are rumored to be in on Martin, but he is more crude than the players assistant GM Logan White and scouting director Tim Hallgren typically take in the first round.

Here is what BP has us taking...

    15. Los Angeles Dodgers

It’s no secret that the Dodgers are also very high on Hicks, who plays in their back yard. With Hicks likely already gone by the time they pick, there has been a lot of speculation about the Dodgers going the college closer route, and their scouting department has been seen in attendance of Texas Christian closer Andrew Cashner’s late-season games. The problem is that kind of safety selection just doesn’t fit with the Dodgers' philosophy. High-ceiling high school players do, and the best one on the board at this point could be two-way Florida prep star Casey Kelly, the son of a big leaguer who has first-round talent as an infielder and as a pitcher, while also having a scholarship to play quarterback at the University of Tennessee clouding his signability, a factor which contributes to people having him going anywhere from seventh to 30th
Selection: Casey Kelly, SS/RHP, Sarasota HS (FL)
