Read in a couple places that Tony was way off in his evaluation of the Gwynn deal. If he was going to be a regular starter it would/should be in CF, where he's an elite defender, with Kemp moving either to RF or LF. Since Gibbons is one half of the LF platoon, using Gwynn there makes little sense since he's also a left-handed hitter and an inferior one at that.

Diaz just signed with the Pirates, so he's off the board. But there are still RH outfielders out there that would make a sensible platoon with Gibbons. I think Gwynn will be the 2011 Reed Johnson role, nothing more. If he gets regular playing time than the Dodgers are in real trouble.

One thought for LF, White Sox possibly looking to trade Carlos Quentin for bullpen help. Broxton for Quentin?

I wouldn't necessarily be opposed to that, but who would be the closer? I don't think it would be smart to force Jansen into that role yet.

I think the Dodgers would be open to either Kuo or trying Padilla in that role. Kuo was pretty dominant as a closer last year, but is still a bit fragile. Padilla has the stuff to do it; mid 90s fast ball, good control, array of breaking stuff. There have been rumblings that they re-signed Padilla to not only be a swing-guy in the pen, but also as a potential closer option.

Also, looks like Francoeur is heading to KC. So of the three bats the Dodgers were supposedly targeting for LF, only Bill Hall remains and both the Sox and Yanks have interest which doesn't bode well.

Also, Diaz apparently turned down more money from the Dodgers to sign with the Pirates, one of the reasons: Pirates spring training is in Florida. So not only do the Dodgers leave behind historic Vero Beach and lose a huge part of their history, the decision also cost them Matt Diaz!!

So the lineup right now, looks something like this:

    Furcal
    Uribe
    Kemp
    Eithier
    Loney
    Gibbons/Somebody
    Blake
    Ellis/Barajas
    P

    Yikes.

Yup, that's it. You can change Ellis to Navarro, Dodgers just finalized a deal with Dioner to be the other half of the catcher platoon with Barajas.

Really need another bat, word is now that the Dodgers are heavily after Bill Hall to play LF, while also filling in at 3B. He's got some power, though at the expense of a very high K rate and low OBP. Meaning he'll fit right in, if he's added there will be lots of .250BA, .300 OBP, 15-20 HR, 120+ K guys in this lineup. The pitching staff will have to carry the team if it's going anywhere, and Loney and Kemp will have to show a lot more than they did in 2010.

Yes, we pretty much know what we're getting from everybody, those 2, especially Kemp, can do more.

Add Austin Kearns to the mix for potential new LFs. Not terribly excited.

Just when I was starting to think that this offseason was somewhat respectable....

There could easily be 4 black holes in the batting order (P, C, LF, 3B), with 2B also as a potential if Uribe doesn't hit like he did in SF. The Dodgers really need to upgrade LF or 3B badly, the lineup is soft.
