Anything worth shooting is worth shooting twice. Bullets are cheap. Life is priceless.
I wonder if part of Torre's thinking is to make a statement to Ned and upper management, essentially saying "Hey, as we currently stand I'm forced to go with a guy like Padilla for opening day. Get me a real #1 starter!"
Torre doesn't seem manipulative, but this could be a subtle dig at the Dodgers lack of pursuing a top of the rotation arm this offseason. Of course I'm probably reading too much into this.
I think it's just that Torre has been around long enough that opening day is just another game on the schedule, and since there isn't a clear ace, you might as well just get your matchups the best you can. Especially since it's a road game.
