How exactly do you sign players when a team is for sale? Wouldn't new owners be the ones doing that? Is Mc Court responsible for another season's payroll regardless if he isn't the owner?

Apparently you don't, I guess this explains Ned's urgency to re-sign Juan Rivera while he had the chance:

Per Tim Brown of Yahoo, Rod Barajas will be getting $4MM next year with a team option for 2013 from the Pirates. Does this deal make Juan Rivera pissed that he didn't hold out for more?? Clearly this is a sellers market if deals like this are coming out this early in the offseason. Couldn't Fielder or Pujols make the argument they are 10x more valuable than Barajas or Rivera!

Don't understand this deal for the financially strapped Pirates, if you don't have a ton of money to spend and can't afford to retain options on guys like Maholm, why spend early and highly on guys like Barajas!!

Pittsburgh Pirates sign catcher Rod Barajas, formerly of Los Angeles Dodgers, to one-year deal - ESPN

Well, at least Ned can't sign any ex-Giants to ridiculous contracts

Looks like Carroll is leaving too, I liked him as a utility guy and nice to see he's getting a chance to be an everyday shortstop somewhere. That's two starting veterans down (Carroll didn't have a regular position but he had the 4th highest plate appearances on the team), wonder if Ned is gonna freak out and start signing mid/late 30 year olds to fill out the roster.

I think Aaron Miles has a good chance to return now, with the uncertainly in the infield (No 2B, very young SS, Uribe at 3B), the Dodgers still need a solid utility guy and Miles was exactly that last year.

I'm waiting for actual news comes/articles come out besides tweets.

So with the Ellis and Rivera signings the following sickeing scenario has taken shape:

In 2012 The Dodgers will be paying $20 million combined to Juan Uribe, Mark Ellis, Juan Rivera, and Matt Guerrier. You could argue that none of these guys are much better than any in-house options or bargain bin spring training invitees. Uribe is the only one with any real distance over our next option because of his power and a lack of 3B options. Ellis and Rivera are barely upgrades over Miles/Sellers at 2B and Sands in LF. And you could argue that Guerrier was the least effective arm in the bullpen. McDougal, Guerra, Jansen, Elbert, and Lindblom all outpitched Guerrier and combined make $2.2 million.

Effective roster management could have left the Dodgers with a team just as viable as the current version and $15 million or so to play with.

And just for an added bonus, Manny Ramirez and Andruw Jones will cost the dodgers $15.5 million in EACH of the next two seasons!
