Dodgers apparently close to signing Jerry Hairston, a 2 year $6 million deal for the utility player.

So the Dodgers couldn't bring back Kuroda because they didn't have enough money, but will be paying around $20 million in salary to Rivera, Ellis, Kennedy, Hairston, Treanor, and Capuano. An OF/1B who was DFA'd last year, a decent light hitting 2B, two backup infielders, a no-bat backup catcher, and a marginal 5th starter who is not in Kuroda's league and has had 2 Tommy John surgeries. Vintage Ned. Why not give Kuroda the $12 million or so he was looking for, give Sands a shot at the LF job, and still have $8 million to sign a 2B and three bench players. Even if they still signed M. Ellis, they would have had $3-4 million left for a backup catcher (dime a dozen) and 2 infield reserves (guys like Miles who cost $500k last year).

Also, looks like they are near signing Harang for 2 years/$12 million. I like Harang so don't mind this deal as much though they now are committing $26 million to Harang, Capuano, Ellis, Rivera, Kennedy, Hairston, and Treanor. I'd rather have Fielder & Harang and let the youngsters and non-roster invitees battle it out for the LF, 2B, and bench roles.

Dodgers need a new owner and GM in a very bad way.

When the hell is Selig gonna step in an say "Enough is enough Ned" and rip up these ridiculous signings? I actually don't mind a rotation of Kershaw, Harang, Capuano, Billingsley and Lilly. I could've done without the Capuano signing but whatever. As for the other scrubs? Makes me want to dig out my old glove and cleats and give it a shot.

A team that struggled offensively for much of last year has made the following moves:

Catcher: Out - Barajas; In - Ellis/Treanor = Downgrade on offense
    2B: Out - Carroll/Miles; In - Mark Ellis = Downgrade on offense
3B: Out - Blake/Miles; In - Uribe = Could be upgrade on offense but I'm skeptical about Uribe particularly after an awful display at the plate in 2011. I'd call this even.

Any increase in production will have to come from Ethier and Loney. It's probable, if not likely, that Kemp will not match his 2011 numbers and that's no knock on Matt but it'd be beyond wishful thinking to expect him to repeat one of the greatest offensive seasons we've seen in a long time. And Dee Gordon will have his struggles as a youngster with very little command of the strike zone.

Trading out Kuroda/2011 5th starters for Harang/Capuano can't really be considered an upgrade as Kuroda is a far superior pitcher than either of the newcomers. And while it's nice to have 5 "legit" starters in the rotation, remember the Dodgers basically had 6 last year (Kershaw, Bills, Lilly, Kuroda, Garland, Padilla) and only got full seasons from 4 of them.

In summary, I'm not terribly optimistic about 2012 beyond the knowledge that a new ownership group should be in place and there might be hope for 2013 (or maybe 2012 trade deadline).

Hanley Ramirez on the trade block. It would take quite a lot to get him, not sure Florida would want Gordon since they signed Reyes to play SS. Gordon at 2B? Imagine those two at the top of a lineup! I'm guessing Ethier/Gordon could get it done, or at least be a strong starting point. Hanley and Kemp together would be incredible, since they aren't signing Fielder or Pujols I can imagine a better hitter that would be available.

Angels land Pujols, and possibly CJ Wilson. Dodgers get Hairston, Kennedy, and Capuano. Nice timing by the Halos, they picked the perfect time to land a haymaker on the Dodgers.

In 2013 the Angels will be paying Pujols around $25-26 million. In 2013, the Dodgers will be paying Hairston, Ellis, Capuano, Guerrier, and Uribe $25.75 million. Who got the better deal??

This front office house cleaning cannot come soon enough.

I heard a rumor on the radio that Prince Fielder might accept his arbitration offer and test the free agency waters next year due to this year's supposed soft market.

If that is case, it sets up an interesting scenario whereby the Dodgers would(hopefully) have a new owner and GM presented with the opportunity to make a significant splash by signing him, after all.

That being said, I bet he ends up signing with Baltimore in the next few days.
