Easy to say that now. How did you see all these arm problems coming?

Personally I don't really blame Colletti for the Schmidt thing and I give him credit for signing him to a short term (3 year deal) when the industry has been giving pitchers 4 and 5 year deals.

He still threw 200+ innings in 2004 and 2005.

Damn near all pitchers have some sort of problems nowadays. I don't recall anyone here worrying about Schmidt's arm problems when we signed him nor anyone in the media.

    Some more about Manny.

“We said, `Think about it for a while. It’s not going to be there forever,”’ Colletti said. “Things are always subject to change, and it depends on what else we do, to some extent. I’ve been asked a few times here if we’re going to wait to see what happens with this before we do anything else. But I’m not sure we’re going to have the luxury to do that. If there’s something else that comes about that we feel we need to do, and the timeliness is there to do it, we’ll have to do it.”

Ryan, Ottawa: Are the Dodgers annoucing this offer to Ramirez as their way of saying "We know we ain't gonna get him, but at least we tried."??

SportsNation Keith Law: (2:13 PM ET ) My thoughts exactly. I'm not sure why he would take a two-year deal. He should get at least three from the market. And if you believe that players reaching milestones is worth some extra revenue to the team, he's got a great shot to reach 3000 hits in the fourth year and could pass Willie Mays if he really goes bananas.
Bob(New York): Hey Klaw think Brad Penny could come into play for either new york teams?

SportsNation Keith Law: (2:00 PM ET ) Yes, or Boston a la Bartolo Colon last year. He's a great upside play if he'll take a one-year deal with incentives.
Paolo (Tempe, AZ): What's your take on this rumors of the Dodgers being down on Russell Martin? Any hint of truth in them?

SportsNation Keith Law: (2:16 PM ET ) Not enough to trade him. That's directly from Colletti. They don't have another catcher internally.
Tim (Lynbrook, NY): Carlos Santana would've been a nice replacement for Martin.

SportsNation Keith Law: (2:23 PM ET ) But Casey Blake is a winning player!
Shane (Boston): If the Dodgers were to offer Russell Martin to the Red Sox, what would it take? And would you do it?

SportsNation Keith Law: (2:47 PM ET ) I'd deal Buchholz for him. And I still really, really like Buchholz. I think the scarcity at the position makes Martin's value more than Buchholz'.
Bucholz is a tremendous talent, but for me that wouldn't be enough. He's had basically 1/2 a good season and was pretty poor last year. Still young so I'm sure the best is yet to come but since like Law mentions above we don't have a viable replacement for Martin he wouldn't be enough. For me it would have to be Bucholz and Lowrie, something like that and even then...

Pat (Philly): Im positive I asked this question earlier this year, but I cant find it in the chat logs. Anyways the question is, Soto or Russel over the next 5 years?

SportsNation Keith Law: (3:13 PM ET ) I don't think you asked me. Whole package? I'd probably take Martin. Younger, better defender, outweighs Soto's superior bat.

As was the case with Manny Ramirez, the Dodgers are hoping to keep free-agent shortstop Rafael Furcal with a two-year deal, as well. The Dodgers are offering Furcal a two-year contract for about $25 to 30 million, according to a person familiar with their thinking.

Why the hell would Martin be shopped in the first place?

Lots of innings in 2004 and 2006, not in 2005.

I'm pretty consistently wary of situations like this. WHIP trended up, and he's too far into his 30's to expect things to trend the other way now. Recurrent problems with a surgically-repaired body part = bad.

I think my position was, "At least it wasn't for more years." I think that was my same feeling about Jones... and Kent... and Garciaparra.
