ESPN breaking news that's not really news at all. Still think Randy is the best fit of all 3, I'm not at all sold on Looper and Garland is average at best. I'd still rather roll the dice with Sheets or make a play for Pettitte, but Ned seems focused on this trio of starters.

Sources: Los Angeles Dodgers in talks with three starters - ESPN

The Los Angeles Dodgers have intensified conversations with the agents for free-agent starters Randy Wolf, Jon Garland and Braden Looper, with the hope of signing one of them in the next few days, according to sources who have spoken with members of their front office.

Although there have been reports that Wolf is their preferred choice in that group, other sources refute that, saying the team has equal interest in all three starters -- and plans to sign the pitcher who represents the best value in both dollars and years.

Last weekend, it appeared that conversations had heated up between Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti and Wolf's agent, Arn Tellem. But indications Friday were that the two sides hadn't spoken in several days.

The Dodgers seemingly have put their pursuit of Manny Ramirez -- or a bat to replace him -- on the back burner until they finish addressing their pitching issues. They also have interest in relievers Dennys Reyes, Russ Springer and Luis Ayala.

I think we'd all prefer Sheets. Other than money I can think of two reasons on why they would be hesitant on signing him. The first is obviously injury troubles. Sheets hasn't pitched 200+ innings since 2004. He got close last year (198.3) but also had a DL stint.

The other reason is that he was offered arbitration by the Brewers, so if we sign him we lose that draft pick. It might sound like a minor reason but I bet that is playing a role in our inactivity with Sheets. Especially since our system has taken a hit due to promotions (good) and some bad trades (not so good!) So this year's draft will be important in replenishing our system.

Personally I wouldn't mind sacrificing the draft pick to get Sheets but perhaps that is why the market is lukewarm on Sheets at least from the Dodgers point of view.

"We lost a lot. I'm going to tell you, we lost a lot of people, and we haven't really replaced anybody. I'm usually champing at the bit to go to spring training right now, and I know we got three weeks before we get down there. We need to add some players."

"Out of all of them, the guy that was probably - I'm not saying he was disappointing - but didn't have the kind of year we'd have hoped was Russell Martin. The other three guys (Andre Ethier, Matt Kemp, James Loney) did a pretty good job, but we need Russell to play the way we know he's capable of playing."
Bowa's comments about Martin from that interview.

He's also an idiot. Bowa is the same guy who was fine with trading Clayton Kershaw.

That being said, I like having him around because he's good for at least 2-3 meltdowns a year.

The Dodgers signed knuckleballer Charlie Haeger to a minor-league contract and invited him to spring training.

Haeger, 25, was recently non-tendered by the Padres, who claimed him off waivers in September and saw him give up eight runs in 4 1/3 innings in four appearances (twice against the Dodgers, with Blake DeWitt hitting a three-run homer).

Haeger spent the earlier part of 2008 pitching for the White Sox organization at Class AAA Charlotte, going 10-13 with a 4.45 ERA in 178 innings. He has tossed 34 big-league innings.
