I don't disagree with you that the Dodgers should be big-market spenders, and I never have. However, I would like to see spending be at least somewhat efficient and not just tossing $ at guys like Juan Pierre.

And that's not to say Colletti hasn't done a good job--he's had some great moves too (Saito, Nomar last year, Ethier, etc.). He just has a few "what the ****?" moments as well (Pierre, Hendrickson).

A good thing Colletti has done has been cutting/trading guys who weren't cutting it or he felt didn't fit: Antonio Perez, Danny Baez, Milton Bradley, Willy Aybar, Jose Cruz JR, Cesar Izturis, Dioner Navarro, Odalis Perez, Ricky Ledee - all of which aren't doing much these days.

Here's to hoping he can keep it going and get The Blue some more help.

The Ethier trade turned out fantastic.

He's cut guys who weren't cutting it, but he's also added plenty of guys who aren't cutting it either.

    - Sanchez for Seo (garbage)
    - Jackson (garbage) was dealt for Baez and Carter (garbage)
    - Guzman (garbage) was dealt for Lugo (garbage)
    - Aybar and Baez (garbage) were dealt for Betemit (garbage)
    - Navarro and Seo (garbage) dealt for Hendrickson and Hall (garbage)
    - signing Pierre (garbage)
    - signing Tomko (garbage)
    - he gets a pass for Mueller and Schmidt because of injury

Just doing things for the sake of looking busy isn't commendable. It's not a negative, but it isn't impressive either. At least with Jae Seo, Danys Baez, and Lance Carter he rectified his mistake pretty quickly.

It's also much easier to improve a roster when you get to bump the payroll up $25 million and you inherit a dominant developmental system (Martin, Broxton, Loney, Kemp, etc.) as well as two stud pitchers who are actually underpaid relative to market value.

Now don't take my post as an indictment either; just making sure to play devil's advocate here. The first five of those are relatively minor moves. He's definitely had his fair share of gems too:

    - '06 signing Nomar
    - trading for Ethier
    - signing Saito, Beimel
    - Furcal: solid, but we WAY overpaid for him. Originally I was very skeptical because I had no idea we'd bump the payroll up so significantly; I'm cool with it though considering the positional need, the short term of the deal, and the fact there was plenty of available $ room.
    - dealing Izturis for Maddux
    - signing Wolf (I'm biased on this one though)

Martin homers with Furcal on base!

    2-0 early.
