You can function pretty well with a torn labrum. You can even throw with one. It might nag a little, but it's still torn. It's basically cartiledge, so you don't really "feel" it, but sometimes, yeah, you do.
It is a structural problem though, and it's necessary to ensure smooth overhead motion. Meaning, it was probably impinging Schmidt. But the thing was completely detached...I don't know how they didn't see that in the MRI when they saw the bursitis.
