I love when we get an onslaught inning like that one in the 8th. It happens so rarely, it's nice to see it.

Nasty new poll on LATimes in Dodgers articles:
Here are the results as of now:

What is the worst deal in L.A. Dodgers history?

    1.0% - Signing Dave Goltz
2.1% - Signing Jason Schmidt (i think it's unfair to put this already on the list)
    1.0% - Signing Don Stanhouse
    3.2% - Signing Darryl Strawberry
6.5% - Replacing Ross Porter with Charley Steiner
4.2% - Trading Paul Konerko for Jeff Shaw
1.8% - Trading Paul LoDuca for Choi and Penny
58.3% - Trading Pedro Martinez for Delino DeShields
12.4% - Trading Mike Piazza for Sheffield, Bonilla and others
    9.6% - $15 for parking

Has to be the Pedro deal. As much as I hated the Piazza and Lo Duca trades and as much as they set us back, boneheadery like the Pedro trade comes along once in a lifetime. At least I hope so.

That LoDuca deal has actually worked out quite well for us. Martin emerged and Penny is primetime.

It's ok now, a few years later, but it took two years with no catcher before Martin came up. And I'm still waiting for Penny to show his face in an important game. He's been great in the first half and I'm glad we have him, but that doesn't get us back the 2004 post season and all of 2005 where we had no catcher and sorely missed Mota. Watching Lo Duca and Mota celebrate on our field last year didn't help me with it, either. Especially after Penny was basically a no-show for the stretch and the playoffs, as he was in 2004.

And don't forget Hee-Seop Choi. Just the fact that we wasted time with him also sours me on it.

I'd deal Lo Duca and Mota for Penny every day of the week.

    - Lo Duca predictably tanked down the stretch in '04, and is still one of the most overrated catchers because the NL has had no depth at the position for years until now. Last year was by far his best season since his breakout 2001 season--and no coincidence when he was hitting in front of the best 3-4-5 in baseball.
    - Mota is still a head case, and his 5+ ERA since the trade (and 6.75 ERA in the NLDS) didn't change that.
    - The minor league pitcher Bill Murphy in the deal was a piece of the Steve Finley deal, who was vital to making the playoffs in 2004.
    - The myth that our bullpen depth suffered in '04 post-Mota trade: Brazoban was light years ahead of Mota in '04 post-trade, and filled the same amount of innings.

The problem wasn't that Lo Duca was dealt--it was that he wasn't adequately replaced (Navarro, Phillips were total busts). Moral of the story: If you want $20 million off the payroll, you have to cut corners.

And if there's anything to take note of about this season, it's that quality starting pitching can cover up other significant blemishes pretty damn well.

The LoDuca trade angered the hell out of fans when it happened. Even the year or two after.

It's been said that trades cannot truly be analyzed until 3-4 years after they are made. Here we are and I agree with JB (for once). Good move. We struck some luck with #55 but who isn't luck what trades are all about?

Martin hitting 3rd?? Loney, Kemp, Eithier, Abreu all in the same game?? I think Grady may have been kidnapped in Canadia.
