I'd trade either Elbert of Kershaw in a deal for Blanton. Its just our luck that Elbert blew out his shoulder this year.

Blanton would be a fantastic replacement for Lowe who is definitely going to test the free agency market this offseason.

Doesn't he have one more year in his contract?

Lowe signed a four-year deal before the 2005 season, so he's signed through 2008.

Penny is also signed through 2008, but there is a club option for 2009 that will almost undoubtedly be exercised.

Proctor set his equipment on fire on the field earlier this year after a bad game. Early candidate for the team's Milton Bradley Stability Award.

    Percival to the Dodgers?

    ESPN

6 Troy Percival, Cardinals RHP --
    MARKET REPORT
For a guy who was so officially retired, he threw out the first pitch on opening day in L.A. of Anaheim, Percival sure has pitched well since the Cardinals signed him (3.07 ERA, .212 opponent average, 15 whiffs in 14 2/3 IP). But here's a development even more surprising: The Cardinals have been offering him around over the last 24 hours. And there have been rumblings Tuesday that the Dodgers were actively exploring bringing Percival back to Southern California -- in this case, Los Angeles of Los Angeles -- for a mid-level prospect. Could be a name to watch as the deadline approaches.

I wouldn't go that far. It was more of a joke than anything and the media ran with it and made it something it wasn't.

Even more reason not to mortgage the future this year.

****! The A's want Kershaw. I want Blanton on the Dodgers, but not for Kershaw.

The Dodgers made a strong, aggressive push to acquire right-hander Joe Blanton from the A's on Monday, but fell short of completing a trade, according to major-league sources.
The talks could revive, sources said, but only if the Dodgers initiate another effort prior to the non-waiver deadline at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Such an attempt is unlikely; the Dodgers, after offering the A's three top minor leaguers two position players and one pitcher are not willing to go further, one source said.

The Dodgers also are concerned with Blanton's recent performance; he is 0-4 with a 6.75 ERA in his past five starts, allowing 52 hits in 32 innings.

Barring a resumption of the Blanton talks, the Dodgers intend to focus on acquiring bullpen help Tuesday. They do not find any of the other available starters appealing.

The identities of the minor leaguers in the Dodgers' offer for Blanton are not known, but four Class AAA players third baseman Andy LaRoche, shortstop Chin-Lung Hu, second baseman Tony Abreu and right-handed reliever Jon Meloan likely were among those discussed.

    Concur.

Kershaw has the potential to be a very dominant pitcher when he hits the big leagues a couple years down the road. I think he is worth hanging onto.
