Default Beckham - does anyone care?

Is the media circus in LA even half as bad as it is here in the UK? I am going mad because every time I turn on a a sports channel I have to watch coverage of Beckham and his journey into semi retirement in the MLS. We've even had a count down to him getting on the damn plane. In football terms it is such an insignificant move - it's doing my head in.

    So my question's are:
    Does anyone in LA care?
Are you sick of 'Brand Beckham' yet?
is it yet obvious in the US that the whole reason for this move is Mrs Beckhams need for fame?

I liked Beckham before the whole media circus got involved and i'll be buying my jersey at Sports authority tomorrow. I'll be at the Chivas USA match a few weeks down the road.

On a siden note, why the hell is the sponsor bigger than the team logo. It looks like this is team Herbalife instead of the galaxy.

In all honesty, about 95% of the people that like soccer out here and Mexicans. Mexicans can give a rats hairy arse about Beckham. I'm sure you can find a small percentage of the remaining 5% that actually truly care. I'll bet you 1lb British Sterling that 33isgod will be the only guy buying the jersey at Sports Authority tomorrow.

Brand Beckham? Does he have a brand like Jordan or are you referring to something esoteric?

I don't know about Mrs. Beckham but I bet that both of them will be appearing somewhere on film sometime in the somewhat near future.

Sorry, I know you were hoping to feel better after reading how much Beckham will be appreciated in the states. Fact of the matter is that 99% of Americans were scratching their heads wondering why anyone would pay so much money for someone that is obviously over the hill. Not only that it's a huge investment in a sport and nobody really expects it to pay off.

The only time a large number of Americans are into soccer is when it's in the Olympics. Then again, last winter Olympics I watched curling so take it for what's it worth. The NHL thinks they have it bad....damn, at least they aren't the MLS.

In case you haven't heard, Real Madrid made $440 million Euros off Beckham merchandise, in his 4 years at the club.

Beckham does not have a brand like Jordan, but Beckham's global appeal has surpassed Jordan's at his peak.

How the hell do you think he got this popular? Because millions and millions of females, metrosexuals, and homosexuals who don't give a rats ass what Beckham does for a living, can't get enough of him.

Only in MLS is the team badge bigger than the sponsors. The new shirt now looks like what they wear in the rest of the world.

I'm not an MLS fan but I might watch a Galaxy game now.

I understand everything you said and I am also aware of it. However, you missed the point or did not comprehend the context of the first post in this thread. It's about Beckham in America. It's all fine and dandy that little buck toothed English boys are running around sporting David's jerseys but that doesn't mean that it's going to happen here. Besides, it hasn't happened here before he signed in LA. Ever wonder why that global appeal never really reached but a very small percentage of Americans.....it's because America hates soccer.

Except for the Mexicans of course

Brand Beckham is the annoying phrase they use in the UK when discussing the Beckhams perpetual self promotion.

Wasn't hoping to feel better at all. In fact your response was more like what I was expecting - I personally hope he sinks without a trace out there as I'm fed up hearing about it. You are right he is way past his best and his best was never that good anyway ... if anyone is expcting him to be as entertaining as Geoerge Best they are going to be very, very disappointed.

I couldn't give two ****s about Beckham... He is going to realize (like Gretzky did), in this market, he is a small fish in a HUGE pond. When you you grow up and live in Los Angeles you are spoiled by the parade of superstar athletes that roll in here every ****ing day. I've seen Magic Johnson, Kareen, Shaq, Eric Dickerson, Marcus Allen, Wayne Gretzky, Kobe, Vlad Guerrero, Troy Aikmen (at UCLA)... ****, I met Muhammad Ali once just walking through the halls at the Forum during a Laker game, so wonderboy Beckham better understand what he's in for. And another thing.... he picked the WRONG city to try and promote soccer in. In this city, if you don't WIN and WIN often people WILL NOT show up.
