Who was the best soccer goalie to ever play the game and who is the best current goalie? I know nothing about the game and simply wanted to see some clips of what makes a great soccer goalie.

You'll get a number of answers from some of our futbol fans on the board.
My opinion, it'd be tough for me to choose anyone else but Iker Casillas of Real Madrid.
If you're talking about all-time, I don't think you can really choose one. There's been far too many great goaltenders that have guarded the posts in the storied game. It'd be impossible to name one. Kind of like 'Best NHL Goalie ever', you're going to get answers that vary from Roy to Sawchuk and Dryden to Plante. With that said, it's hard to top Lev Yashin. The man played on another level than his opponents. He made spectacular saves seem effortless.
Thanks for that. Here is a you tube montage. Once again Im not soccer expert or fan but some of those saves are great.

Also, look up Gianluigi Buffon, Timo Hildebrand & Petr Cech. Even Edwin van der Sar, though, his best days are behind him.
If money is an indicator the best current goalie would be Gianluigi Buffon, I believe he still holds the record as being the most expensive keeper. The Natural brings up Casillas, he is a good choice, but he doesn't have the international pedigree that Buffon does.
Buffon can be argued as the world's greatest active goalie. He's up there for me, I'd probably rank him #1.
Some other stuff for you Hip.
Gordon Banks is known as making the best save of all time, it was against Pele in 1970. Youtube it, I am sure there are clips of it.
The Natural brought up Yashin as the best goalie of all time, I've never seen him play well before my time, Natural did you ever see him?Anyways, that seems to be the consensous, Dino Zoff is also highly regarded, and Oliver Kahn(currently at the end of his career) was one of the best of his generation.
For me, the best goalie I've ever seen was Peter Schmeichel. He played behind a very attacking Manchester United team and collected plenty of clean sheets. Hopefully there are youtube clips of him lying around. The best I've ever seen!
My dad, who played in a few leagues in Mexico and SA, used to talk about him with so much emphatic enthusiasm. My dad was playing when Yashin was in his hayday. I still remember being a young kid, not knowing who this guy was that my dad was talking about, just picturing and imagining this beyond belief guy making these acrobatic and athletic saves. So, because I heard so much about him growing up, I've just always conceded that he was one of the best ever, if not the best. Videos my dad has collected since then has backed up what I imagined as a kid. Some of his saves were mesmerizing.
Well, if the question was 'Best goalie you ever saw play', there's no one that would beat Peter The Great. I've never been a ManU fan but there's no denying Peter The Great was special. Special is an understatement. For me, the best goalie I've ever seen was Peter Schmeichel. He played behind a very attacking Manchester United team and collected plenty of clean sheets. Hopefully there are youtube clips of him lying around. The best I've ever seen!
Hip, if you want to see some of the best saves ever filmed, youtube Peter's save against Rene Wagner of Rapid Vienna. Also, a save against Dennis Bergkamp in the 99 FA Cup Semis.
Very subjective, but I think I'd go with Kahn over Schmeichel.
