I have no idea who Merida is, but why are Barca willing to let these kids go? Cesc Fabregas, Merida, and Pancheco who is only 16 playing regularly on the U18.
Barcelona is NOT letting them go!!! They are being poached because there is a law stating that you can't give under 17/18 year olds professional contracts. The big English clubs come in and seduce these young players to leave for "greener" pastures. Messi, Iniesta & especially Cesc Fabregas made it worse for Barca because now all these teams know exactly what kind of talent is hidden in their youth ranks. On top of that the Spanish youth systems are probably the best in europe. I think Brazil & Argentina might have the 2 best systems in the world for obvious reasons...

    Well, I like that law.

Barcelona youth goalkeeper Alex Sanchez is supposedly negotiating with Liverpool.

I lost count how many teenagers Liverpool signed this summer.

Arsenal have announced they have agreed a deal to sign Croatian international striker Eduardo da Silva.

Don't you think Liverpool should develop their own players? This is starting to get annoying...

Liverpool's academy in the past have developed some of the best English talents, but none since Steven Gerrard.

The former youth manager did not get along with Houllier and Benitez because of his preference to only focus on local talents. The Liverpool board finally gave him the axe, and gave way to Benitez to hire a former Ajax youth coach to take over.

As a result, we'll continue to look abroad...hehe...and pluck players from Barcelona!

By that same token(the fact in Spain they can't offer professional contracts) there are rules in England that pretty much state that you can't offer youth contracts to players not in your area(under these newer rules Beckham would not have been part of United's academy).

So teams in London have a tremendous advantage in terms of developing talent(think of how West Ham has produced so many players). This is why teams from the north have gone to trying to sign foreign youngsters.

Thanks. I've been wondering about that a while now.
