No comments on the Chelsea-Liverpool match? I had to Tivo it because of class and avoided this thread the whole afternoon/evening an it didn't even matter.
I thought Chelsea was the better side in the first half. They controlled the play and Liverpool seemed to give the ball away to cheaply which is not like them at all. Liverpool played better in the second half but they never really seeme all that dangerous. The lack of a truly world class striker really hurts them in a game like this.
It takes a special type of player to make something happen against 2 of the best in the world in John Terry and Ricardo Carvallho. Bellamy was just terrible and Kuyt was isolated up front. I think Liverpool were fairly lucky to get out of the Bridge only down a goal.
Next will be interesting, I think Gerrard needs to be played in the middle of the park, maybe even dropping a striker to play 5 in the midfield but giving Gerrard a free role with Alonso and Macherano behind him.
Liverpool not being in the title race actually helps them out for the second leg. Like Milan they can rest a few key players while Manchester United and Chelsea have to play their big guns this week.
That Lampard chance early on was golden. It's too bad he rocketed it right into Reina.
Ah yea, where Drogba won on the long ball. I believe he headed it back torwards the middle of the box and Sheva's first touch fell right to an oncoming Lampard. Great chance.
Drogba was really superb tonight. It's really a shame he goes to ground so much although I can't really complain as I have Ronaldo on my squad.
I hate Ronaldo just looking at him, but Drogba's much worse with the dramatics.
Liverpool need a left winger badly. A decent right winger so Gerrard can play in the middle wouldn't hurt either.
Everything went wrong against Chelski.
Pennant and Arbeloa should have patrolled the right side because they have done very well together lately. Liverpool needs Gerrard in the middle.
Zenden, and not Gonzalez starting in left mid, was wrong. Ferreira was the weak link in Chelsea's defense and could have been exploited with Gonzalez's speed.
Reina came up big and is the reason why we are still in this series because Drogba worked our CBs, especially young Agger.
Do we need top class stikers? To replace Fowler in the off season for sure, but if you tally the total goals scored by the group of top 4 strikers by each one of the top 4 teams, the difference between the 4 teams is only 2 goals.
The point is, in the future, Gerrard needs to be back in the middle permanently and other midfielders have to chip in. As frustrating as Garcia is, and as frustrating as Kewell's injuries are, Liverpool do miss the creativite spark those two player bring either as a starter or as a sub.
If by "considering the circumstances" you mean Liverpool were clearly second best on the night, yea it was a good result because the score could have easily been 3-nil going to Anfield.
1-0 is not a bad result for Liverpool, but it isn't good either. Chelsea did the job and the big thing is they did not concede the away goal. If they score at in the return leg, Liverpool HAVE to win. If they don't, a draw still gets them to extra time+penalties.
