I think this game really reinforces the thinking that it's very dangerous to play Bocanegra at LB against teams that play through their wings. I understand the thinking behind playing your four best defenders but Bocanegra gets lost out wise. He either drifts to far out or gets sucked too far in.
He struggled with pace all day and has always done so as his time in Fullham showed. He's a capable CB, and even a decent LB in certain matchups but its tough playing him outside against teams with pacy wingers and against teams who are committed to their wide play.
It's a bad situation because the US has never had an answer at LB. It's tough to experiment during qualifying, but it might be worth trying a 3 man backline. Arena used it occasionally and it was successful in 2002. The personnel we have at the back might be suited to this. It's worth a shot.
Obviously dissapointed by the result but one positive from the game is the continued solid play from Davies. Dude was dangerous every time he touched the ball (which was only about 5 times). An in-form Altidore combined with Davies up top could be a VERY good combo. Ching has got to go...hes absolutely worthless at the international level
Davies is a very promising player, great pace and a great finish. Unfortunately he has very little vision. There were numerous times he tried going 1 V 3. Pretty frustrating. I don't know if he was dangerous every time he touched the ball, he did some nice things, it would have been nice to see him play with Altidore more.
Agree there.
Also thought Cherundolo left a little to be desired. Wouldn't surprise me to see Spector get back in the lineup once his season resumes in september.
World cup qualifying also got tighter as Honduras destroyed costa rica last night and moved into 2nd on point differential. All of a sudden the US is now in 3rd place, only one point up on mexico.
Fernando Torres signs contract extension with Liverpool - Barclays Premier League - ESPN Soccernet
Just what the Spurs defense needed to hear. After he celebrates this extension by tearing them a new one on Sunday, I hope he goes on to have another record breaking season!
Other interesting matches on opening day of the 09/10 EPL season:
Chelsea vs. Hull - Out of all the top leagues, I think this is the one that suits Altidore the most. He may not get a chance to go up against Carvalho and Terry, but would love to see how he responds.
ManCity vs. Blackburn - The beginning of "the new Chelsea". The madness off the pitch has already begun. A friend of mine, a former Arsenal supporter as recently as the 08/09 season, just became a new ManCity supporter.
.
Everton vs. Arsenal - Out of all the title challengers, Arsenal are the ones I fear the most despite them losing Toure and Adebayor.
This is hilarious
