Default The Official USA 2010 World Cup Thread

Didnt want this to get lost in the other world cup thread. With the roster announcement soon along with the tune up games and group play there is obviously a lot to talk about. Thoughts? Roster predictions?

I just don't see them scoring enough goals. Another wasted year for Jozy. He has got to go somewhere where he will get playing time. He is such an important player for the team moving forward. With Davies out Dempsey has got to be his partner up top. He's never effective in midfield for the NT for whatever reason anyways.

    Here's the provisional roster:

Goalkeepers- Tim Howard, Marcus Hahnemann, Brad Guzan

Defenders- Carlos Bocanegra, Oguchi Onyewu, Steve Cherundolo, Jonathan Spector, Jay DeMerit, Clarence Goodson, Jonathan Bornstein, Heath Pearce, Chad Marshall

Midfielders- Landon Donovan, Clint Dempsey, Michael Bradley, Stuart Holden, Ricardo Clark, Maurice Edu, Benny Feilhaber, Jose Francisco Torres, Alejandro Bedoya, DaMarcus Beasley, Sacha Kljestan, Robbie Rogers

Forwards- Jozy Altidore, Brian Ching, Edson Buddle, Eddie Johnson, Herculez Gomez, Robbie Findley

Sucks that Davies cant make it but understandable nonetheless. I know Adu has been in limbo but he should definitely be included over Kljestan and maybe even Beasley. The pool of forwards is pretty awful, Im assuming Dempsey will move up top and Holden will take his place on the wing

My predicted starters against the Brits:

    Howard--GK (well duh!)
    Spector--RB
    Demerit--CB
    Onyewu--CB
    Bocanegra--LB
    Clark--MF
    Bradley--MF
    Holden--MF
    Donovan--MF
    Dempsey--F
    Altidore--F

This will really play like a 4-2-3-1 with Clark and Bradley holding mids and Dempsey playing as a withdrawn striker.

Things that may change: Edu may take over for Clark, but BB really like Rico. Also, Cherundolo may take the RB spot and Spector may take Boca's spot.

But this team will likely struggle to score goals without the threat of Charlie up top. This team really needs Deuce to step up and be dangerous. But he's getting great experience with Fulham, here's hoping.

i was thinking 4-5-1 and hope for some positive countering. Would love to see Torres get some looks in there, but Bradley has been pretty consistent using Bradley Jr. and Feilhaber, with Clark too.

I will laugh hysterically if Buddle makes the squad, but wouldn't mind seeing what Herc Gomez can do as he's been tearing it up in the Mexican league. (not likely though)

I was surprised that Adu didn't get at least a look in camp too, supremely over Kljestan.

England game is scary, but you ever know. Other two games will determine whether we get through...

Edson's got the hot hand, but that wont be enough to make this squad. Same for Herc. Ching will make it, and I suspect EJ will too. EJ has been in better form in Greece, plus he has WC experience, bad though it was. And given how BB is going to play the formation, three strikers is probably enough. Plus Landon and Dempsey can both play up top.

And frankly, my mailman was a better choice for this squad than Kljestan. Dude has one Hat Trick for the USMNT and he keeps getting asked back despite he repeated bad performances with the team.

Poor Freddy, so much hopes for him and so much disapointment. I fully expect him to be back in the MLS next season. He has some outstanding skills, especially on set pieces, but so many other parts of his game need work that he struggles wherever he goes. Too much too soon?

Besides GK, the strength of the team lies in their midfield depth so a 4-5-1 is certainly a possibility...unfortunately dont think Bradley is going to go with it though. I hope Edu starts over Clark...Clark has always been decent in a U.S. uniform but now that Edu is back from injury I just think he offers more defensively as well as being more of a threat in the attack as well. I think he has the best chance for any U.S. field player to latch on with a "big club" in the near future and be a difference maker

wow after last night i'm incredibly more worried about our backline. Granted it wasn't the team that will be playing in South Africa.....

    random thoughts:

Gooch - looked incredibly rusty. Rooted to the ground. Timing off.

Goodson - may have played a part in US goal, but was dreadful in back. Gave away free kick that led to Czech goal, completely missed on a clearance that led to Czech goal. Gooch had to cover for him numerous times. And this was the only guy Bob Bradley could praise after the game?

Hercules - may have played himself onto the WC squad. Worked hard to get open. Problem was, he started making runs and no one in our midfield saw it quick enough. Very hungry and determined.

Ching - Not highest quality talent, but a workhorse. I heard him described last night as a "poor man's rice-eating brian mcbride". funny.

Torres - has been my current mancrush for awhile. Nothing spectacular, but fairly mistake-free half. Actually thought he and Edu worked well together.

Buddle - got in the thick of things, but first touch still isn't quite good enough. Probably will be cut.

Pearce - slide attempt when you could've moved into the space? ouch.

Bornstein - still shaky at left back, but often proves me wrong and clears one particular ball at the right time.

I might punch a wall, but it wouldn't surprise me if at 10 am Bradley also announces he's picking Kljestan for the squad.

    Other review from random source:

Not all was negative. Buddle looked dangerous. Herc's work ethic stands out, not just in Mexico, but also on this team. Holden looked surprisingly good considering his recent injury. Torres... did I mention he was Pachuca's best player this past season? Ching, despite all the hate he gets, is a good utility player, he created a lot of the spaces for Herc. Beasley looked fairly decent (refresh my memory but his tragedy at Confederations Cup was at left back, yes?)

In the end, this team is built by a very limited coach. Expect a lot of defensive play from the US in South Africa, unless pressed by necessity. This is a team designed by a head coach who is afraid of the opposition. Any and all opposition. It just frightens the **** out of him. Or he simply does not believe in the American player. Truly not worth the position he is given. Too much is riding on this World Cup for this idiot to be in charge.
England might rape us. The backline might be shoddy. However, sometimes sheer will pulls through. When I thought we had absolutely no chance against Spain squad, I was surprised...
