Default Bruin Nation - Steve Alford? Yea or Nay?

While I would've liked another - Eric Musselman - I do like Alford. At least Alford understands the pressure and tradition of the UCLA job and he can recruit in SoCal. We will see how it works. Will Shabazz stick around? I doubt it but the rest of the team will probably stay. I doubt Anderson goes to the NBA - it will cost him a lot of money to leave now I think. Also read Alford is bring his son with him who is a top 2013 recruit.

We will see. Guerrero's tenure rides on this decision.

Shabazz was never going to stick around. The injury might have secured you guys another season of Jordan Adams, though.

All things considered I think this was a good hire for UCLA. I didn't like the Howland firing; I thought he should have been fired the last two years (no tourney)... but then he adjusts his style (the team was much more up-tempo this year), recruits an outstanding freshman class, wins the Pac-12 regular season title and THEN gets the boot?

And worse, just call it what it is; the boosters hated him and wanted him out. This whole "we are UCLA and we deserve championships, not just Sweet 16 berths" is silly... because what happens if Alford doesn't bring that in the next three years or so? Guerrero should have just called it what it was; a change in direction, nothing more, nothing less.

    I'll say Yea

what kind of surprised me was that Guerrero said he wanted an up tempo coach and Alford's New Mexico team was a lot worse then UCLA this year in up tempo offense.

I do like that he has a strong presence in So Cal and won't lose recruits or screw them over like Howland did with Kendall Williams and him playing for a rich tradition like Indiana he knows how important tradition is to UCLA, so I expect big things from UCLA basketball in the future.

Then Dan Guerrero is going to be fired, which is long overdue for an incompetent donkey that he is.

    He's terrible.

Last year's football season was a fluke, too. I like Brett Hundley a lot, but that team lucked out; didn't have to face Oregon regular season, rainy day vs. USC (not that they couldn't have beaten them anyway, but nice to take the pass game away), ASU when Will Sutton was out, Arizona completely ****ting the bed... everything seemed to fall their way until they got exposed at the end there against Oregon and Baylor. Lost a ton of good seniors... I wouldn't be surprised at all if they fell back to 6-6ish next year.

Take it for what it is worth but I have a very good friend who is a big Bruin donor/alumni. What they told me is that many boosters are PO'ed at Guerrero on the Alford hire because it was seen as rushed. The thought is Guerrero was so bent on beating the $1M bonus that Alford was due by UNM that he passed up on some very interesting head coaches who are still in the tournament. Apparently some big names who still have teams playing were interested in the Bruin job. Do you think Guerrero didn't want a head coach more popular then he is?

If he passed on speaking to Donovan or even Pitino I think i am going to be very, very ticked off.

Well I heard that the Howland firing was written in stone by the boosters, who wanted him out, and that barring an Elite 8 (or better) run he was going to be out of there. This is backed by the fact that the dude won the Pac-12 regular season title, beat Arizona all three times and would have had a great shot at a Pac-12 Championship AND deep run in the tourney if not for Jordan Adams going down, yet still gets canned.

So I don't know what their problem is. They can't have their cake and eat it too.

As a UNLV fan I'm sure glad he's out of the MWC. Nex Mexico hasn't been the most talented teams but they won and won.
