Default Jason Kidd appears to be headed to Dallas

ESPN - Sources: Mavs, Nets close in on Kidd deal - NBA

Dallas would send Devin Harris, Jerry Stackhouse, some expiring contracts (DeSagana Diop, Devean George, and Maurice Ager), 2 first round picks, and cash to Jersey for Kidd and Malik Allen.

Mavs are overpaying. They lose Harris, an outstanding point guard, and now their bench is gonna be pretty shorthanded.

I wouldn't call Devin Harris "outstanding". He is a solid young point guard but he is a few notches below Chris Paul and Deron Williams. He's really only had one good season which is this one and he's averaging 5.3 assists per game. Nice numbers, but I don't think he's a future all star by any means.

The Mavs are giving up a lot, but with this trade they have a superb trio of Kidd, Howard, and Dirk. Plus Terry who has proven can hit big shots in the playoffs. They are not as deep as last year but Brandon Bass has been very good for them as an energy big man off the bench and they still have swingman like Eddie Jones and Trenton Hassel they can run out there. Not an ideal bench, but in the playoffs you shorten your rotation anyways.

The Mavs had to make this deal, and not giving up Josh Howard is huge. There is no way they could have run out pretty much the exact same team as last year's playoffs.

Good gamble by the Mavs, losing Harris "hurts" but I don't think it kills their future.

I didn't mean to imply he was a premier player at his position. But he did have a lot of talent, and was really strong on the defensive end, with the quickness to keep up with guys like Paul and Nash. Might not be a future all-star, but he is a strong young player.

True, but they'll really miss the spark Stackhouse gave them off the bench (although there are rumors he might be bought out and return). Also, they were already pretty thin at center, and now that they're losing Diop who's gonna back up Dampier?

I don't know - their future doesn't seem very bright. Seems like their window of opportunity was closing, and getting rid of one of their strong young players and a couple draft picks for Kidd won't help that. I guess Cuban and Kerr are both going for broke with these blockbuster trades.

Looking back on that Lakers trade, it really does look ****ing awesome. Didn't give up anything significant for Gasol, who's still in his 20s and is under contract for a few more years. With Bynum and Farmar still maturing, we'll likely be contending for at least the next 4 years.

Speed doens't=defense. I don't Harris is a defensive stopper by any means. This was the guy who Baron Davis absolutley torched in the playoffs. Harris is very promising young player, but the Mavs are in a position to win now. They don't have time for Harris to grow into that role.

Stackhouse will probably be back by playoffs, no big loss there. Howard and Dirk will get a lot of easy baskets playing with Kidd, I don't think the losing of this "spark" is a big deal, especially when you are getting Kidd back and Stackhouse will most likely return.

Not many teams are built to win now and 5 years from now. The Lakers are a team that comes to mind, and probably the Spurs, who else is there? Off the top of my head there's not that many CURRENT contenders who can say that in 5 years they will still be contending. The Mavs have the potential to win now, there's no use worrying about 5 years from now when they wouldn't have been that much better off keeping Harris. They'll get 2 good years out of Kidd and he might re-sign. 5 years from now Dirk will be 35, he likely won't be as good as he now. Might as well go for broke now.

That's why I can understand the gamble made by Kerr. Nash probably had 2 at the most 3 years left of prime basketball. They wern't going to win with what they had, gambling on the Diesel is risky, but I think they are more likely to win now then they were with Marion.

    Way to go Devean

Actually, I would do the freaking same thing if I was him. You go from having a chance at winning another championship ring, to a team that is a playoff team in the East, but will stand no chance whatsoever.

The way I see it is that he'd rather stay with a Pretender team, than go to a No-Chance-In-Hell team. Trade or not. Dallas still isn't going to win.
