I'm not sure why people think adding O'Neal while getting rid of Odom and Bynum would help things. Yes, you'd get a low post guy, but he's not going to make up that much of a difference from the guys you lose. The Lakers need a tough guy who plays nasty down low. Get Odom out of the 4/5 and get me a 10/10/2 guy who plays hard. Adding O'Neal just replaces Odom's scoring, gives you a little more defense, and makes Kobe have to handle the ball all the time. Just my opinion.

Yeah get it done Mitch, so the Lakers can lose in the first round to the #3 seed instead of the #1 or #2.

Ideally the Lakers would want to add O'Neal to a core of Kobe and Odom. Odom would then be able to finally play the 3 instead of moving back and forth and the Lakers get the low post threat they need.

Even with adding O'Neal and losing Odom, its still a plus for the Lakers. O'Neal is a double team threat that Odom isn't. He's a guy who can draw fouls on opposing bigs which leads to more FT opps for everyone. In addition, I don't think Kobe has to handle the ball THAT much more. You still have the PG, lets say Fisher as the primary ball handler. Then Walton starting at 3 who also initates offense. It's not a great lineup, like I said ideally, a core of Kobe, O'Neal, and Odom would be in purple and gold next season. But I'm not holding my breath.

I'd love to hold onto Odom but is there anyway to make a move for O'Neil without including Odom, if only to match salaries?

Taking a quick look at next year's salaries:

    Odom - 13.5
    Bynum - 2.1
Cook - 3.5 2-years left plus player option

    O'Neil - 19.7

    also
    Kwame - 9.075 1-year left
Vlad Rad - 5.6 3-years left plus player option

If you're Indiana would you take a Bynum/Brown/Rad/Cook(20.2M) package for O'Neil(19.7M)?

That deal would then leave the Lakers with:
    0 Centers
    3 Forwards - O'Neil/Odom/Walton
    5 Guards - Bryant/Fisher/Evans/Vujacic/Farmar/Crittenton

I just don't see a deal happening without including Odom.

Mihm resigned and O'neil plays center. Don't forget about Ronny Turiaf who will also be on the roster. But even with those players, you're right, it just doesn't seem to pan out.

It doens't make much sense without Odom, but let's be honest I think most people like me are banking of the fact that Indiana has no use for Odom.

    A starting 5 of

    Jeff Foster
    Troy Murphy
    Lamar Odom
    Mike Dunleavy
    Jamaal Tinsley

Really does nothing for Indiana, even in the East. Bird might be inclined to take that hodgepodge of "talent" aka the deal without Odom just to start over again and to not have another big contract on his books(Odom).

Like 33 mentions, Mihm can play center and when he inevitably picks up those early fouls O'Neal can slide over to 5. It's not the greatest idea to have him play heavy heavy minutes at the 5 but there aren't that many legit 5's in the league anyways.

    C-Mihm
    PF-O'Neal
    SF-Odom
    SG-Kobe
    PG-Fisher

Then you have Walton, Farmar, Turiaf, and Evans as your main bench guys. It's not a championship team but I'd go to war with it. I wouldn't want to underestimate Kobe in that situation either.
