The Los Angeles Lakers have acquired Memphis center Pau Gasol, a league source said Friday afternoon.

The Lakers will send Kwame Brown and Javaris Crittenton to Memphis in the trade, along with a future #1 pick.

More importantly, it will give Odom the ability to move from the 4 back to the 3. Though, I think this is the end of Odom in a Laker uniform. I can't see there being a need to have him around as a 4th scorer with that contract. Look for the Lakers to trade him for a hard nosed defensive guy that can play a couple of positions and a first round pick. It would be tough to move him for just that though. Maybe a couple of expiring contracts too.

Also, it seems they're giving up two #1's in this trade. A lot to give up, but getting a 27 year old talent is a good thing.

Well, the second #1 is countered by Memphis's #2 that year (2010). I mean, how far apart are we talking here?

Well Odom doesn't that already. I wouldn't call him hard nosed but he can guard a ton of positions and his mentality on offense suits what we have now. It's an advantage that he's overly unselfish now.

Plus it's the other way around, these "hard nosed" defenders aren't expensive. Teams trading for Odom would be put over the cap. It'll be hard to trade him I think. If Buss wants a championship team he'll keep Odom, sure he's getting paid a lot but he's a good defender, great rebounder, and a very good passer.

Odom is a great #3 or #4 option. It's being the #1 or #2 guy that he's not good at.

I'd keep him around to start at SF.

I should have probably been more clear. I'm thinking they look to trade him in the offseason. Too many trades can screw with chemistry and that's not what you do when you're playing well typically. Also, it's been said that it can take players a while to get and understand the triangle offense. Can't imagine they'd want to overhaul the whole team right now with that being a concern.

I think they're looking for another guy like Ariza more than a low post guy. My guess is that they're happy with Ronny coming off the bench to spell Bynum and Gasol when they need a rest. Getting another swing guy that can maybe keep up with some of the bigger PG's and SG's would add some more depth to the bench.

We'll see what happens, but I think Odom is going to be moved. I like the guy, but where does he fit after this season? Not so much logistically, but does it make sense to pay him what they are for a guy who's likely to be phased out offensively?

That is actually a pretty interesting way to look at it. At the same time I can't help but think that Odom will fade into oblivion now. Perhaps the Lakers are going to sit on him this season to see how it works out. If it doesn't then Lamar and his 08/09 salary of $14.5million can be someone else's expiring contract acquisition next year.

    Cammy and a pick anyone?
