Hochuli's also manning up and taking his e-mail lumps. His e-mail address isn't hard to find with a simple Yahoo! search, and he's been bombarded with hate mail. And still, he's replying to everyone. Someone relayed the following reply from Hochuli to a message board at the San Diego Union Tribute.

I'm getting hundreds of emails – hate mail – but I'm responding to it all. People deserve a response.

You can rest assured that nothing anyone can say can make me feel worse than I already feel about my mistake on the fumble play. You have no idea ...

Affecting the outcome of a game is a devastating feeling. Officials strive for perfection – I failed miserably. Although it does no good to say it, I am very, very sorry.

"Gun Show" Hochuli has a good reputation, so this is unfortunate. I'd be pissed, too...but hate mail is going a bit too far. Wouldn't expect that stuff from San Diego sports fans, but whatever.

    **** San Diego.

Anywho, who gives two ****s about a blown call that cost a team a game in WEEK 2? What if the Chargers miss the playoffs by 3 or 4 games? Are they still going to be screaming bloody murder?

I should send ole' Ed an email and tell him that I hate the Chargers and thank him for screwing them.

And.. you know... ask what his secret is to getting such nice pecs.

The hate mail is uncalled for, being a Chargers fan, that one call didn't cost them the game. The inability of the SD defense to stop a late drive again did.

Hochuli is one of the best in the biz, one mistake isn't going to ruin that reputation imo. Would you rather get stuck with Jeff Triplette, who ruined a player's career by throwing a flag into his eye?

Im not a HUGE football fan, but Hochulis(?) has been a consistently good referee in all the games I've seen him in. (I can always recognize him by his amazing biceps). I watched the SD/DEN game and as stated above, it wasn't the referees fault SD lost, they put themselves in a position to lose with lackluster defense the entire game. One good defensive play earlier in the game could have sealed it for them, but it didn't happen that way. Blaming a ref for a loss is a cop out.

That bastard! How dare he flag Julius Peppers!

Quite honestly, people make mistakes and i still contend he is still one of the better referees in the NFL. So for me, all is forgiven.

Yeah, but that play wasn't his missed call.
