Retired NFL legend Junior Seau was arrested early this morning on suspicion of domestic violence ... law enforcement sources tell TMZ.

We're told Seau was arrested in San Diego early this morning -- and booked into the Vista Detention Facility around 2:00 AM.

Seau -- who rose to NFL stardom with the San Diego Chargers -- was released around 3:20 AM.

Seau also played for the Miami Dolphins and the New England Patriots.

Junior Seau drove his SUV off a cliff in Carlsbad, CA this morning -- and survived -- this according to law enforcement.

We're told the retired NFL superstar sustained injuries in the wreck -- cops are on scene. TMZ obtained these photos of Seau's Cadillac Escalade which landed at the bottom of a cliff several feet from the beach.

Seau has been transported to a local hospital. The accident happened just south of Oceanside, CA ... where the former San Diego Charger had just been released from jail hours earlier.

As TMZ first reported, Seau was arrested early this morning for domestic violence.

Skid marks????? Don't think so. Looks more like he was trying to fly but picked too wimpy a cliff.

Is there some reason why all of the outlets seem to be reluctant to speculate whether this may have been a suicide attempt. Hmmm rage followed by remorse and surrounded by impulsive decisions. What could cause that???? Hmmmm.

Junior Seau told police that he wasn't trying to commit suicide when he drove off a cliff in Carlsbad, CA early this morning -- insisting that he simply fell asleep at the wheel.

Law enforcement sources tell TMZ ... Seau told police that he simply nodded off in the driver's seat of his Cadillac Escalade in the hours after his arrest for allegedly attacking his 25-year-old girlfriend -- and never intended to drive off the cliff.

We're told Seau showed no outward signs of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs ... but a blood test was taken shortly after the incident and results are expected back some time in the next 6 weeks.

The accident is still under investigation.

No criminal charges will be filed against football star Junior Seau for the incident that led to his arrest Sunday night on a domestic-violence complaint by his 25-year-old girlfriend, the San Diego County district attorney announced late Friday.

Prosecutors reviewed evidence submitted by Oceanside police.

"As with every case we review, we have an ethical duty to file charges only when we believe we can prove them beyond a reasonable doubt," Dist. Atty. Bonnie Dumanis said in a written statement.
