If they were to do a playoffs, I'd do it this way: to keep the first round bowls entertaining:
New Year's week (12/29-1/1)
RoseBowl: Big Ten Champs v Pac Ten Champs
SugarBowl: SEC Champs vs At Large #1
OrangeBowl:Big East vs ACC
FiestaBowl: Big 12 Champs vs At Large #2
Week After -(Sun Night / Mon Night following week)
Rose vs Fiesta (location rotates every yr)
Orange vs Sugar (location rotates every yr)
A major concern here is how to do the logistics for this game. We're talking about college football fans here, they'll go anywhere whenever to see their teams play. If the locations and weeks are consistent, I'm sure they'll figure it out.
2 weeks After Rd 2 (Superbowl off week Sunday @ 3pm)
Champ game (rotation every 4 years)
----------
The 4 bowls actually mean something, especially the Rose and Orange. The At-Large teams won't always be the #7 and #8 teams in the nation, they could be runner ups in a good conference ( see Georgia).
But the #1 and #2 teams in the nation might play in Rd 1. It *might* happen, but that just means we'll see a great game during the first week too. People will question that #1 seed if they don't win the big game, much like Ohio St. keeps not earning their BCS seeding.
If this season was re-seeded to my suggestion it would have been:
USC v Ohio St
LSU vs Hawaii
West V vs VTech
Oklahoma St vs Georgia
Regardless of whoever won the games, the champion of that tourney would be very legitimate.
