Usually Carroll comes off as a cool/nice guy but that press conference yesterday was pretty ugly.
The QB class is pretty thin, Stafford and Sanchez will battle to be the #1 QB drafted. I think Stafford is ahead but Sanchez has a better close to the season.
I think if he came back and stayed healthy, Sanchez would have been a top 10 pick even with Bradford and McCoy returning as well. USC is returning almost every starter on offense except for Turner and now Sanchez but there's always that injury risk. Can't really blame him for leaving, at worst he is a 2nd round pick who will move into the 1st round after workouts, interviews, etc.
I don't think it was ugly, I think it was realistic. Mark Sanchez is the first QB to leave USC early in years. He only has one season of actually running a team under his belt. I don't necessarily think he's gonna go all Ryan Leaf, but I do think Mr. Caroll had a point in that another year of experience being 'the guy' couldn't possibly hurt him and I dont think that being honest in that he disagrees with the decision means he is going to support him any less.
I just hope that he doesn't turn into a puss like Carson Palmer. Tear your knee apart then come back to set the world on fire, then a couple years later bruise your elbow and sit a season.![]()
With Pete Caroll's record, I believe he knows what he is talking about. Mark Sanchez will probably not play for years if at all in the NFL. Many college QB's have been one year wonders in college football and have been a bust in the NFL. Obviously Sanchez is worried about his ability and his stock since he does not want to compete against Bradford and McCoy in next years draft.
On one hand, I am happy for Sanchez and I hope he gets the money he wants, however, he is not a Matt Ryan or a Joe Flacco. These were proven college QB's for at least a couple of years. Bradford was the Heisman winner and we all saw what a good defense did to him and in the NFL it just gets more difficult. Bradford was smart to stay and work on his game before he makes the jump. I do wish him well, however, it maybe too early to leave the college game. I hope he proves Pete Caroll wrong.
I don't think Carroll was being a selfish baby. Last season the QB job was up in the open to any of the guys who came out and take control and it was Sanchez. Now with only 1 year under him I'm not sure how realistic it will be for him to see some playing time in the NFL anytime soon.
Don't forget people that the CBA for the NFL is ending and they want to institute a harsher rookie salary cap so some kid can't come in and earn to big a chunk of a teams payroll.
Carroll has sent enough guys to the NFL to know if Sanchez is ready, he'll just retool and move on. That first game @ Ohio State should be interesting.

Great point Tonga! I believe you are correct on this one! They talked about the new CBA on the radio a few weeks ago and about the impact it will have at the 2010draft. I am sure his decision had something to do about that. Get it before it is gone! Maybe a smart move for him.
