That is my point... I'd rather spend millions on a bunch of gambles then nothing on... nothing. It is hard to get top flight free agents to come to a team like this so I have no problem at all signing potential.

I agree that Stallworth is a bigger risk but Berrian has improved every year. He has great hands and speed and has put up adequate numbers with the crap that is the Bears QB situation.

I see Berrian as a much better "risk" than Walker.............this of course is coming from a Viking fan though.....

Raiders made a couple of minor signings - wide receiver Drew Carter and defensive lineman William Joseph.

I wonder who we're going to pick in the draft. Some people have McFadden falling to us, but even if he does I don't know if running back is our biggest need, considering how well Fargas played last season. Plus we're (hopefully) going to have a healthy Michael Bush this year. Glenn Dorsey is intriguing - he's an explosive DT with good agility and athleticism, along with a good football IQ. We certainly have a need there, with Sapp retiring and subpar play from guys like Sands and Warren. Sedrick Ellis is another player that we might target, given how many ties we have with USC. Supposedly he's a better fit for our defensive scheme than Dorsey. He's an excellent pass rusher and can get around blockers but he's had durability issues and doesn't have the best frame.

^ I would like to add DE's Chris Long and Vernon Gholston to those names. Our biggest weakness is the DL, I don't know if we will be drafting Ellis or Dorsey...Kelly will be playing UT and we payed him a lot of money. Out of Ellis and Dorsey, Ellis is better suited to play NT...but I don't see us drafting a NT with the 4th pick. You gotta love Chris Longs motor and attitude, Gholston brings the athletisim.

The Raiders gave up their 2nd for DB Deangelo Hall.

    Wow.

If we are some way able to lock up Asomugha, that'd be freaking amazing...what a CB duo that would make.

Carter is a nice signing. He's got nice size and a lot of speed. I don't really expect too much production out of him, but at least he brings some experience to our WR corps and a lot of speed. Now we have somewhat of a deep threat that JaMarcus can utilize.

Joseph is a depth signing. He was highly touted coming out of Miami, he played on the same dline as Vince Wilfork among others but he hasn't been able to stay healthy. I think he's a bit of a long shot to make the team depending on who we draft, but he is a talent.

If we take McFadden, I'll be pleased. Counting on Justin Fargas and Michael Bush to stay healthy is a huge roll of the dice. Both guys have never showed the propensity to stay healthy, especially Fargas whose injury problems go back to his early college days at Michigan. Given Fargas' running style, he's bound to get banged up a few times during the season. Bush is a talent, that is for sure but he hasn't played football in over 2 years. Who knows what we can expect from him. Rhodes took a pay cut to stick around so at least we have some nice depth.

McFadden would be a welcome addition, RB might not be our greatest need but he the biggest talent in the draft. That being said, we have a lot of holes to fill elsewhere especially on defense which makes it a bit hard to just draft the BPA.

I don't really see how Ellis is a better "fit for our system" since they both play exactly the same. Both guys are one gap penetrators, Dorsey is a bit bigger but Ellis looks like a Sapp clone. Low center of gravity, at the senior bowl he killed everybody that was put in front of him in practice.

Ellis has been rising on draft boards while Dorsey's stock has held or dropped a tad. There have been issues regarding his knee that he hurt in his last season at LSU that have some teams dropping him on their boards.

If the Raiders decide to draft a DT, I think Ellis will be the pick, given Kiffin's ties to USC and Al Davis' propensity to draft players from USC. Both guys will be good players at the next level, but in a way both guys don't exactly "fit our system" since both guys are similar to Tommy Kelly. Ideally you want to pair up a penetrating DT with a 2 gap DT who'll clog the middle. On passing downs obviously you go with your 4 best pass rushers, but our run defense was atrocious last year. Terdell Sands was supposed to be our big run stuffer but he was garbage last year. Hopefully he steps it up this year, but I'm not holding my breath.

I would be fine with adding Dorsey/Ellis to our defense because ultimately that's more talent/playmaking along our front 7. Kelly would probably move to DE on rushing downs and come inside on passing downs.

I would love to draft Chris Long but I think he's going #1 to the Dolphins barring a trade down.

Gholston's stock has been really rising. He's a big time pass rusher very similar to Derrick Burgess but with better measurables. He would be a nice pick but I think we need more help inside.

The Raiders like to tout Kelly's versatility. I think we are free to draft a Dorsey or Ellis because Kelly can play DE on first and second down, and on obvious passing downs Kelly can move inside.

Ellis played some NT at SC but I don't think there's anyway he's able to do that in the NFL. He's simply not big enough to hold up at the point of attack at the NFL level and anyways it would a waste of his quickness and athleticism to ask him to play a 2 gap style. We flat out need more talent along our defensive line. Ellis or Dorsey would do just fine, with Kelly's ability to move around, Ryan would have a lot of guys he could play with along our front 4. Regardless, we really need Terdell Sands to step up his play as he is the only true 2 gap DT on the roster.

Yea, that's interesting. I'm not sure how feel about this trade, Hall is an extremley talented player who is in desperate need of a change of scenery. He fits our style well as Ryan loves to play exclusive man to man on the outside with a FS helping in the deep middle. Hall has all the tools, size, speed, quickness, and he's pretty physical. Basically he's the prototypical Raider CB.

The only thing is, this is a pretty deep draft and we would only have 1 day one draft pick if this trade goes through. Davis likes the draft, I would anticipate us moving down in the draft to get more picks, it's hard for me to see the Raiders only having 1 day one pick.

With the excellent offseason we've had though, adding "only" Dorsey/Ellis/McFadden would be fine with me.

Your assuming all the free agent signings we've had are locks to be successful. I'd say Gibril Wilson be fine but the rest are gambles.

    Walker-Injury issues

Kelly-Injury issues and has never had one outstanding season season

Carter-not enough production for his talent, goes back to his OSU days

Harris-Has been terrible his entire NFL career

I'm about as optimistic a Raider fan as it gets, but calling this off-season "excellent" is very premature. I would certainly want to supplement these free agent moves with a solid draft, which is why I'm hesitant on this Hall trade.

I think if it goes through we'll be looking to trade down, especially if the rumors about Hall getting an Asante Samuel type deal are true
