I love the track too...
but I ****ing hate all the bull**** about "pomp" and "beauty".
It's a bunch of ****ing degenerates (high class or low) betting on midgets riding beasts of labor.
It's barbaric, disgusting and a hell of a lot of fun.
Agreed Doc... I've never been around more fellow Raider fans in my life, with the exception of maybe USC's campus on gameday...
I spent an afternoon in the owner's box at the Del Mar Race Track.
I didn't see any Raider fans. I saw a lot of people pretending that what they were doing was sophisticated and classy.
At the end of the day... it was still midgets riding beasts of labor for other people to gamble on.
The food was just a lot better.
So was the talent... and I'm not talking about the ponies.
Last Friday night at Hollywood Park! Any of you LGKers gonna be there?
I gotta say USCKF that you are okay in my book. You're an alcoholic, who is on his way to being a compulsive gambler, and you are a hard core King fan to boot. Except for the USC part, you remind me of myself in my college days.
Here's my horse racing story:
In 1990 I went to Santa Anita and bet a 2 dollar Pik 9 ticket. (not place 9, but pik 9). The carryover was like 250,000.00. I had the 8 out of 9 winners that day including a 4-1, 7-1, and a 6-1 in the final race. The only race I lost was the 5th where my horse (the favorite) finished 3rd.
There was one winning ticket that day will all 9 winners. The ticket paid 555,000.00.
Because it was the last day of the Santa Anita meet, there was no consolation prize for tickets such as mine. (I estimate this little detail cost me near 30,000.00)
Since then, I haven't come close to matching that feat.
The last race I went to was at least 25 years ago. I bet a long shot and as the horse was nearing the finish line, it broke it's left leg and that helped it win the race. I will never forget the horse limping to the outside rail and kinda resting his head on the rial. I was at the races with a long time racing fan and he told me the horse would have to be destroyed. I felt so guilty cashing my ticket in I have never gone back.
Sorry, didn't want to sound like Debbie Downer or anything but it was sick......
Thank you for the kind words, even if that does make me a degenerate
That is incredible man... sorry to hear about the near miss. I still suck at picking winners. There are just so many factors... and the terrible part is, the more knowledge you get of the sport, the HARDER it becomes to pick winners! (You start overthinking everything).
I'm considering moving out to Vegas and working in a sports/racebook so I could soak in all the sports and races and actually MAKE instead of LOSE money in the process.
(Only to gamble away what I make... at least the beer is free!)
Opening day @ Del Mar is this Wednesday! I will be there and may even have some extra tickets![]()
