I was waiting for you to clarify what a "championship level team" is. I'm assuming just making the Finals qualifies. Reggie Miller and Allen Iverson did it in 2000 and 2001 respectively.

Here's a couple of links that i found regarding the whole situation with different takes

Reggie Miller would almost be the next best argument for a 2-guard leading a top level team, but they had a hard time getting past the Knicks because the Knicks had Ewing. They matched up well with Chicago the one year, 1998 when they went 7 in the East finals, because Chicago's strength was also at the 2. Of course they got past the Knicks that year because Ewing was just coming back off a broken wrist and had been out for five months.
But again, what happened when Jordan left the second time? The Spurs immediately won the next year with Duncan and Robinson over the Knicks who had gotten there with Ewing but lost him for the Finals with his achilles. Then it was Shaq and the Lakers for three years, then Duncan a couple more times, etc.
I find Charlie Rosen's article laughable. Does this guy even do his homework? Can ANYONE explain to me how the Lakers are supposed to be saving money? How they could go after all the free agents that they want? Could they have had Jason Kidd? Yeah. Sure. I would have preferred they got him about 8 years ago like they were rumored to along with Shawn Marion for Kobe though. I don't want to trade Odom, Farmar, Bynum, and likely something else for a 50 something year old Jason Kidd. Just not smart. And KG? Does anyone think that Kevin Freaking McHale is going to trade him to the Lakers for that same package? Why do fans of teams think that every other team in the league will give up their superstars for our garbage. Just because we did that for Shaq, it doesn't mean it happens all the time.
Then you had the case of Boozer (who the Lakers could have had in the draft by the way). It was a done deal from all accounts until (EDIT) Jack Haley was yammering on about it in the news and that basically killed it. Utah fans were going insane and they ended up pulling out of it because of the reaction. Don't even get me started about Baron Davis either. NO wanted expiring contracts and youth. The Lakers had neither let alone both.
Did anyone catch Kobe on Duck calls last night after the game?
Adrian Warjanowski clearly dislikes Kobe's attitude.
And another
Jerry Buss: ""pursue every avenue possible" to improve the team.
I forgot where i read it from but apparently there is a deal in the works for Jermaine O'neal. But then again, there was also one for Kidd and Garnett the past few years. So if it happens it happens.
