We'll be the 2008 NBA Champs next year if we acquire either Garnett or Jermaine O' Neal.
Quote me on that!!!
www.latimes.com/sports/basketball/nba/lakers/la-sp-adande3may03,1,908630.column?coll=la-headlines-sports-nba-lakers"I'll do whatever it takes to win," Bryant said. "I've had to do a lot just to get us into the playoffs. I don't want to do that. I want to win championships. I don't want to be a one-man show, a team that goes onto the road, the opposition crowd wants to see me score 50 and lose.
"I'm not with that. I'm about winning. I want to win championships and win them now. So, they have some decisions to make."
You listening Jim Buss?!!! aka the real GM
It has already been said that the Lakers will not acquire another top 20 player so if there is any truth to that, we can all count out Oneal, Garnett, Kidd, Bibby and Artest in any conversation.
But this is the Lakers. This is the team that will do whatever it takes to create a championship team. I won't be surprised at all if one of them are on the roster, if not two of them.
This is speculation because Kwame has an expiring contract at $8mil next year. Contracts like that tend to be very valuable.Originally Posted by TotalRecarl

I would not call Ron Artest (or Mike Bibby) a top 20 player though--I don't want to see Artest here either, and Sacramento would never move him within the division.

Cheer up, guys--you could be Knick fans.
Phil, the Busses, and Kupchak are all to blame.
I blame Dr. Buss for trading Shaq, for unloading good players that he thought were expendable (eg Caron, Horry), and not being willing to spend luxury taxes.
Jimmy is at fault for his refusal to let go Bynum, no matter what, since it was his pick. No matter who Bynum might bring us, management will have to fight Jimmy tooth and nail to get him to give him up. He also turned down a trade for Jason Kapono, one of hte league's top 3 point shooters.
I blame Phil for pressuring the brass to acquire Kwame. He also wanted Devean gone instead of picking up his option, causing us to waste the MLE on Vlad Rad. He's reluctant to make in-season moves for players without tri experience, and is always willing to deal the future away for the present.
Kupchak is to blame for not knowing how to assemble a good basketball team. He is a visionless leader and just takes orders. His methodology approach to the draft has caused us to make stupid draft picks like choosing Kareem Rush instead of Tashaun Prince, Cookie over Barbossa and Josh Howard, etc. Overall he has a poor eye for talent. He also has no contingency plan, is terrible at closing deals, and since the Shaq trade has just gone for home run attempts in trades. He's been ultra conservative in his dealings, which gets us nowhere. Kupchak and Phil are dually responsible for our horrible use of the MLE the past couple years and for placing too much emphasis on triangle experience, leading to gaping holes on defense, point guard, etc.
Another thing that really gets me is this whole management by committee that Buss has implemented. Especially considering that the members of our brass have conflicting goals, which lead to aimless compromises that severely impede any progress.
