Lesnar has dropped off 106 due to illness. Forrest / Ortiz 2 is now the main event with the UFC working on a co-main. Gonna be hard to salvage this card methinks.
We've got a lot to catch up on in this thread.
I was actually at UFC 104, I got free tickets from Dana White via Twitter. It was my first event and it was pretty sweet being in the arena for a big time PPV card. I'm not sure if I would ever pay for tickets though. We had pretty sweet seats, in the lower bowl of Staples about 15 rows from the floor. Seeing fights live was something else but for a lot of the groundwork we found ourselves looking up at the TV screen. Like I said it was fun, but I'm not sure if I would go to more than one event per year.
Anyways as far as Machida-Shogun, it was a really close fight. The crowd definitely had Shogun winning, after watching it on TV I thought it was a pretty close fight and it could have gone either way. Machida was more clinical in his striking which doesn't really translate well live. He was more accurate but I still think Shogun landed more blows especially those leg kicks.
I feel part of the reason the decision was so controversial was that nobody has ever made Machida look so average. Shogun fought a great fight, and maybe he deserved the belt. Really could have gone either way. Can't wait for the rematch.
Cain Velasquez is the real deal. He tossed around Ben Rothwell a decent-solid HW and a big guy like a rag doll. His ground and proud was particularly devastating and it was impressive that he could so much damage in Rothwell's guard. I expect big things out of Velasquez, the fight with Nogueria will be a tough one for him just because Nogueria is so damn tough himself. And Cain hasn't fought anyone with the submission credentials of Big Nog before. That fight has been postponed because Nog has Staph but when it does happen it will be a must watch fight.
Joe Stevenson has looked great since joining Greg Jackson's team. Looks like he's gotten back to his roots of wrestling and ground and pound. He got Spencer Fisher in the crucifix position and just killed him.
UFC 106 has some nice undercard bouts but Forrest-Tito is a really weak main event. Koscheck-Johnson is a nice addition to the card, and I think the Karo-Hazelett is an interesting fight. We also get to see the debut of little 'Nog and Phil Baroni's return to the UFC. I don't think Baroni is any good but his fights always seem to be entertaining.
So what did you guys think of that Couture-Vera match from last night? I think Vera won that fight. All Couture did was pin him against the cage and hang on. It was a wily move by Couture and it helped that the ref was not really interested in breaking them up.
It's too bad, Vera fought a really good fight if he maybe gotten on Randy a little sooner in the second he might have ended it.
Couture got the W but his reflexes are slowing down. If he faces a dangerous striker with good takedown defense that fight could get ugly.
