First off I'll say that Randy is a great guy and a great ambassador for the sport. He's been a great champion for the UFC at the Heavyweight division and the Light Heavyweight division, BUT I think it is ridiculous to say that Fedor is the only fight out there for him.

Let's be honest, Randy while a great fighter did not deserve a title shot against Sylvia. The UFC gave it to him and while it benefited the UFC(gave them a very marketable HW champion) it benefited Randy just as much. If he didn't get the opportunity to fight for the belt I don't think Xtreme Couture is as big as it is now and neither is the affliction brand of clothing. Randy has a lot to thank the UFC for and vice versa. I think walking away like this is fairly bush league.

Moreover who has Couture beaten at the HW division during this current title reign? Tim Sylvia and Gabriel Gonzaga. Not exactly the cream of the crop of the heavyweight division. I think it's a joke to say that Fedor is the only legit fight out there for him. Big Nog was the champion of PRIDE for a long long time. I mean Nogueira has 4 losses, 2 against Fedor, 1 against Barnett, and 1 against Dan Henderson. How is he not a legitimate opponent for Randy?

Spot on. I think Randy knows that the MONEY fight is against Fedor though. He wins that and he's golden. He can either fight and pick what he gets paid or can retire and go on claiming he's the best. He fights Nog and then wins. . .he's still "just" Randy. He wins against Fedor though. . .he's got a whole new legacy.

I really believe that he's making a mistake on this one. I don't think he gets the fame that he appears to be craving if he goes and fights Fedor in M-1. . .in his ring. . .with his rules. . .and his crowd. It just really doesn't make sense. I think something is going to happen in the next couple of months that changes Randy's mind. Maybe it's wishful thinking, but it just seems TOTALLY unprofessional to do what he did. Like I said earlier, it's just un-Randy.

Been thinking about this since it was announced and my feelings are that it's obvious Randy was frustrated with dealing with the goings on in the UFC. However, for Randy to believe that Fedor was the only one left to fight is something that can be disputed quite a bit. I support Randy in everything he does, obviously being such a huge fan, but I don't agree with his decision.

He made the decision to come back and defeat the 'fight not to lose' Champion no one liked and successfully defended his title in a miracle-like bill against a favored opponent in Gonzaga. I'm sure that in his mind, he didn't return to fight in the UFC and end it there after two or even three fights. Something told me that he was going to fight until he lost and then decide to bow out. This just doesn't make any sense. I think that had he returned to just make one last fight against the reigning champion in Sylvia, I doubt Dana would have allowed Sylvia to defend his title knowing it was a one-off fight for Randy so it's evident that Randy would have liked to continue and see how far he could have taken it against the current coup of HW in the UFC. I'm sure if Dana had his way, Cro Cop would have been the next challenger but that went to hell quick.

I don't know. Maybe Randy came back with the intentions that he would win the belt, prove himself against the UFC HW class and then have one last battle against the incoming Fedor. Everyone knows that fight would be mega money and I think Randy's taking that into consideration and wants to control the way he bows out. Who knows. I think we'll get more information in the next coming weeks.

Brandon Vera/Tim Sylvia. Wow, that HW class looks REAL exciting now!

Not sure if this was sarcasm but I'll be honest, I'm still pretty excited about the Heavyweight division. Losing Randy is a big blow, no doubt. But I think there's a lot of good heavyweight matches that could be made. Which is why I think it's lame Randy retired.

I think Brandon Vera matches up very well with Randy. I think Nog can beat him as well. I would have even liked to have seen Arlovski get a shot provided he made his way up the ladder again.

I think Randy is kidding himself if he thinks that Fedor was the only fight out there for him.

Aside from that. . .lets be honest. Watching Randy in his last two fights it was "Can this old guy do it?" It wasn't quite the same feeling we all had when Gracie came back to fight Hughes. Randy's a solid dude, but I don't know that he was a great MMA guy. He played the rules to his advantage and he was probably the smartest guy in the ring. Not really the most talented. I'd say GG is a TON more talented than Randy, but Randy might be the most cerebral fighter ever. . .and that can take you quite far. I just think that he's gotten a bigger fan base now because. . .everyone loves the underdog. Randy wasn't supposed to beat Sylvia. He wasn't supposed to beat GG. He did though and it was great. I just don't know that he's all he (or other people) think he is. Not a knock on him at all either. It's just that. . .well, ask yourself this: A year ago, were people dreaming of a Randy vs. Fedor matchup?

I doubt he does. Like I said, I think he knows that's the fight that has $$$ attached to it. Him vs. Nog doesn't have near the draw. Maybe it should. . .but it doesn't.

I'm excited about that fight. Say what you want about Tim Sylvia, but he is an upper echelon heavyweight. Maybe not top 10, but he's a quality fighter. Vera has looked good in every fight in his UFC career but this is a big step up in competition for him. Anxious to see how he does.

I agree. Slyvia pre-belt was a tough sob. He was a monster. After he got the title though, he stopped trying to win it seemed like. The fight against Arlovski and Monson were BRUTAL to watch. Before that though, he seemed like a solid guy who would put it all out there. Hopefully that guy comes back.

Love the coverage that Yahoo is giving MMA now too. MUCH better than Sherdog.

    Especially interesting is this tidbit:

Non-UFC sources say that the contract Couture negotiated and signed before his comeback fight against Tim Sylvia in March is for four fights and between $13 million and $15 million, which puts him behind only Chuck Liddell, at four fights and $17 million, in the UFC salary pecking order. Those numbers are believed to include percentages of pay-per-view money.

Looks like we got some controversy in those numbers!

    http://www.sherdog.com/news/articles.asp?n_id=9551

"If he were getting $3.25-$3.75 million a fight then Randy's compensation would not be an issue," said the agent, who was lambasted by White as a Hollywood parasite after Couture announced his resignation on Oct. 11. "However, I can tell you those salary numbers for Randy are severely inflated and I would love to know where they got the information."
