This was my first show I've watched in a LONG time, and yes I know Cole is the heel, but my goodness he made the show almost unwatchable...

That would have made more sense. Miz hiring the New Nexus to take out Orton and he returns the favor by eliminating Cena at the Rumble. Unfortunately, it turns out that The Miz didn't realize the New Nexus helped him... and when he threw out Cena, that's just his own feud. Ugh.

It seems like WWE was thinking, "If we're going to have the New Nexus dominate the 1st half of the Rumble... we're going to need to get the fans back in this with the Cena/Hornswoggle bit". It was stupid as hell though... oh well. =\

I read that too. That makes sense as to why The Miz was still on commentary when A-Ri was already gone. I would assume the same scenario would play out. Riley on the apron, Cena tries to eliminate him, and The Miz throws them both out or something. Then they could credit Cena's elimination to A-Ri. Instead, Cena's elimination is credited to The Miz and the casual fan would scream "BS!".

You'll get used to it. He's been like this for months now. I'm perfectly fine with that because The King has done a complete U-Turn himself.

Cole used to be a face and the King was a complete heel. Then Cole started rooting for The Miz only but remained a face and at the same time, King went face as well. With two face commentators, it got stale so Cole quickly went full heel.

If you get a chance, watch Smackdown. The commentary is genius there. Josh Mathews is 100% face, Michael Cole is 100% heel, Matt Striker is more 60% heel/40% face because he is great at giving credit where credit is due regardless if the wrestler is a face or a heel.

Red face Monday Night RAW Review - 01/31/11

Monday Night RAW Review - 01/31/11

Like Dawdler mentioned... this was a hit and miss show. There were some good things (especially the 1st hour and end) and there were some bad things (the in-between).

Alberto Del Rio, The Miz w/Alex Riley, and Edge segment

I got home about 10 minutes late but I assume Alberto Del Rio was celebrating his Royal Rumble victory. I caught the end of this segment where Alberto Del Rio said he wants Edge at Wrestlemania. Edge then attacks Alberto Del Rio which led to Alberto giving him a guitar shot to the arm and then he applied the cross armbreaker finisher to end the segment.

If anything in the beginning was important, let me know!

WWE Tag Team Championship Match: Santino Marella & Vladimir Kozlov (WWE Tag Team Champions) w/Tamina vs Michael McGillicutty & Husky Harris

Pretty solid tag match. McGillicutty and Harris looked somewhat decent early in the match. I didn't understand why Kozlov tagged Santino in against Husky Harris. It immediately turned the tide of the match for the New Nexus. Why give yourself a mis-match?

I don't quite remember how the finish went. All I can remember is Santino giving Husky Harris the Cobra while McGillicutty was out.

Final Result: Santino Marella & Vladimir Kozlov retain the WWE Tag Team Championship by pinfall.

After the match, Randy Orton stormed the ring and gave RKOs to McGillicutty and Husky Harris. McGillicutty rolled out of the ring while Husky Harris apparently died in the ring.

This segment was annoying. I understand Orton punting Harris and all that, but there was too much stalling. They were trying to build suspense but it took too long to make it believable. Basically, Orton teased a punt for like 2 minutes. CM Punk, Mason Ryan, and David Otunga came out to the entrance ramp and told Orton not to do it. This took another 2 minutes or so.

Punk said if Orton punted Harris, he would face serious repercussions. Orton thought about it for another minute before punting Harris. So someone explain to me why Harris never moved. Finishing moves in general is good enough to keep you down for the 3 count and nothing more. So why did Orton's RKO keep Husky down for 5+ minutes? I realize that Santino hit him with The Cobra before the RKO, but really?

That's what ruined the segment for me. Cobra, RKO, punt. Makes sense. But Cobra, RKO, wait 5+ minutes and then punt? Nope. Doesn't work for me.

Anyway, after the punt... The New Nexus stormed the ring and Orton ran away into the crowd.

Daniel Bryan (United States Champion) w/Gail Kim vs Tyson Kidd

Bella Twins were on commentary and they were talking like heels. This match sucked. Tyson Kidd jobbed hard only because they wanted a catfight yet again. Is this what Daniel Bryan is going to do from here on out? Separate Gail Kim from the Bellas over and over?

I guess I got my hopes up thinking the US Title would mean something again now that Daniel Bryan is the champ. This is the best time to showcase some wrestling with your mid-card guys. But instead, we have the champ in a love-square with divas and nothing happening in the ring.

Final Result: Daniel Bryan by submission.

The Miz (WWE Champion) w/Alex Riley vs Edge (World Heavyweight Champion)

Not sure why they're having this match again. No good can come out of a Champion vs Champion match because you're going to make one champ look bad. This match was alright.. nothing special to be honest.

The finish came when Cena distracted The Miz from a luxury box. He had a microphone and got the crowd to chant "Miz is awful". The Miz was distracted long enough for Edge to hit the Spear to win the match.

Final Result: Edge wins by pinfall.

After the match, Michael Cole checked on The Miz and told A-Ri to do something about Cena. Alex Riley said, "he's all the way up there."

LayCool vs Natalya & Eve (Divas Champion)

Someone explain to me why Natalya was smiling and being all buddy-buddy with Eve (the woman she lost the Divas title to)?!

It was a standard Divas match (meaning it was short). The finish was pretty awesome though. Layla using a move on the turnbuckle called the "Face Lift". It almost looked like a stunner. I hope that's her new finishing move because it was awesome.

I guess that because Divas matches has to be short, it probably explained why Natalya didn't bother coming in the ring to break up a pinfall.

Final Result: LayCool wins by pinfall.

Mark Henry & The Great Khali w/Ranjin Singh vs The Usos

I hope RAW lost a lot of viewers with this segment because it was STUPID. Before the match started, the RAW GM made it a dance off because the GM said The Usos woulddn't stand a chance in a regular match.

So dance they did... both teams were dumb as hell with their dances. The crowd popped regardless because they're idiots. I guess that made Mark Henry and The Great Khali "winners". After the dance-off, The Usos attacked Henry and Khali... only to get destroyed. Khali pulled a huge & moment though when he went for the pinfall thinking it's a match.

Final Result: Mark Henry & The Great Khali "wins" the dance-off.

RAW Rumble Match: John Morrison vs King Sheamus vs John Cena vs CM Punk vs R-Truth vs Jerry Lawler vs Randy Orton

7 Man Rumble. Winner faces The Miz at the Elimination Chamber PPV for the WWE Title. All 6 losers are in the #1 Contender Elimination Chamber match. Painfully obvious who will win, no? If looking at the participants in this match wasn't telling enough, all night long Michael Cole kept talking about how The King has zero chance of winning.

Orton eliminated Punk and then R-Truth eliminated Orton. I forgot who got rid of R-Truth but it doesn't really matter. The final 4 was Cena, King Sheamus, John Morrison, and Jerry Lawler.

Morrison did a ton of unique moves to stay in the Rumble. While it was cool, they really should have him do those moves last night in the actual Royal Rumble. Instead, all Morrison has to show for is his crazy spiderman thing but he was eliminated pretty early.

King Sheamus eventually got rid of him. Jerry Lawler then tried to eliminate Cena and was successful when King Sheamus shoved Lawler onto Cena while he was on the apron. Jerry stuck close to the ropes and King Sheamus took a run at him, only for Cena to help Lawler pull him over the ropes and onto the floor... making Jerry the winner.

Final Result: Jerry Lawler wins the RAW Rumble.

I seriously wonder who didn't expect Jerry to win this match. It works out pretty well though. Jerry has been a "thorn" on The Miz's side ever since he became the WWE Champion. You might as well have The Miz shut him up for good at the Elimination Chamber PPV.

Also, based on the stipulation... Jerry Lawler being in the Elimination Chamber match would be terrible. You might as well have 6 strong competitors fight to become the #1 Contender (which Super Cena will easily win by the way) and have Jerry vs The Miz on the side (even if it's a title match).

Don't forget that earlier in the show, Jerry Lawler talked about how he never had a match at Wrestlemania. I can see Michael Cole costing Jerry Lawler the title yet again so they can have a Wrestlemania match of their own. Keep in mind that Michael Cole is already training to "take bumps" right now.

So at Wrestlemania, we can see Jerry Lawler vs Michael Cole or Jerry Lawler vs Michael Cole & Alex Riley. Just something so Lawler can have his "Wrestlemania moment". I'm sure people wouldn't mind having Jim Ross back on commentary for Wrestlemania either.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------

That's it for RAW. Very hit and miss. It wasn't a good show but it wasn't completely terrible either.

Oh yeah, they also aired a "teaser" with someone in a trench coat and walking in boots with lightning in the background followed by a 2-21-11 date. The two big guesses are Undertaker and Sting. Neither of them really make sense because:

#1 - Undertaker doesn't need a teaser promo to return. Besides, he is on Smackdown. 2-21 is RAW. Then again, the brand extension is a joke so this could easily happen.

#2 - Sting in WWE would be amazing but extremely unlikely. For years, he has rejected contract offers from Vince. Why would he come to the WWE to set up a match with Taker, only to lose at Wrestlemania? It doesn't add up at all.

    2 things:

    1) Cole has an almost impossible role -- He is a heel play by play guy. This is pretty much unheard of, as the pbp guy is supposed to be the "straight" man, the color guy should be a heel and when the heel does something heelish, the pbp guy becomes the voice of the fans.

    2) If you don't think Heenan didn't mark for Flair as hard, re-watch Royal Rumble 92.

That's why I really enjoy listening to Michael Cole right now. He's in unfamiliar territory and it's fresh.
