    Default Card Games...

This forum is so vidgame-centric. Time to change things up a bit!

We've been getting into some serious card game action in our house, lately. With a six-year-old, we're kind of limited to exactly what we can play, but we've found a couple that are really loads of fun.

Uno - This game is a must. Easy to learn for kids as young as 4 (I'd imagine) and just as much fun for adults to play. Simple.

Monopoly Deal - Holy crap!! THIS GAME IS ADDICTIVE. It's a card game spin on the classic board game. The best thing about it is that it takes MINUTES to determine a winner, rather than HOURS. SPEND THE FOUR BUCKS AND PICK THIS UP AT ANY WALMART OR TARGET!

    GUILLOTINE
    - Another game that's loads of fun. Based on the French Revolution, you line up Nobles (cards) that are worth a varying number of points and "behead" them in an order advantageous to you by using the action cards to manipulate the line of Nobles on their way to the guillotine. It's "reading-required" (in order to use the action cards), so not especially suitable to kids under seven or eight, but fun.

DD Mau - Just picked this up today after seeing a bunch of folks playing it here in Tucson (where the game originated, according to the bookstore I saw it being played in). Looked like a blast!

Another we'd like to try is Munchkin.

We've also played rummy and cribbage a lot in the past.

Anything else anyone else has played that kicks ass??
Anything worth shooting is worth shooting twice. Bullets are cheap. Life is priceless.

My family is all Montana/Minnesota farm folk. They play cards. This is always a favorite.

Dominion, it's the ultimate card game! So addicting, highly competative and so much fun. Each player starts with a small deck of cards, there is a selection of other cards on the table available for "purchase". Through the selection of cards to buy, and how you play your hands as you draw them, you construct your own deck on the fly. At the same time trying to acquire as many victory points as possible while keeping your deck efficient.

    Pit

Our neighbors introduced the wife and I to this game. Extremely addictive once you get the hang of it. Of course, the more players the better.

We play a game we call "Daihimi", it is unbelievable fun, especially with a larger group.

put enough decks of cards together so you have 13+ cards per person when all the cards are dealt out.

the object is to get rid of all of your cards (first!)

the highest value card are the 2's.

suits have value as well - from lowest to highest - club, diamond, heart, spade

so the strongest card is a 2 of spades.

the first player decides what kind of hand they are going to play, based on what cards they have. you can play a 5 card poker hand, a 3 of a kind, a pair or a single.

the only valid 5 card poker hands are 2 pair (one extra card you can toss in there), straight, flush, full house, 4 of a kind (one extra card you can throw in there), 5 of a kind (if extra decks).

players go clockwise after that and they have to play a hand with the same amount of cards, with a higher value, or else they must skip. the person who plays the last hand "wins" that hand and gets to start the next round of card playing.

The first player who finishes becomes the "emperor" and the last player who finishes is the "peon". You can make up titles in between for all the players you have. The seating order changes so the emperor starts first, and everyone else goes clockwise according to their "title".

in the following round, the peon MUST give their best X number of cards to the emperor, and the emperor must give the peon the same amount of cards back, but whichever cards they want. of course, the peon can beg for certain cards and look for leniency. the person who finished 2nd gets to take X-1 cards from the 2nd to last person; the person who finished 3rd gets to take X-2 cards from the 3rd to last person, etc until the trade amount would be 0. these would be the middle class yokels haha.

the X number of cards is based on how many people and how many cards you have to play. 13 cards - trade 2. 20 cards? trade 3 or 4.

    a couple of notes:

    you can now end a straight with a 2 - J Q K A 2, which is the highest straight next to 2 3 4 5 6, which is just higher than A 2 3 4 5.

only the top card's suit matters. you could possibly have 2 3 of a kids of 7s played, for instance, but as long as the top card in the second 7s is higher (spade to a heart, for instance), it can be played. this is the same for straights and flushes.

I hope I have all the rules covered here. this is a fantastic game to smack talk your friends .

oh, one more thing. there is an event that you set up before hand dependent on how many decks you are playing with - with one deck, if you are dealt 4 of a kind, you have to announce a "Revolution" and everyone changes seats - the peon becomes the emperor, 2nd to last switches with 2nd place, etc. then you deal again and the new ruling class gets the best cards. if you have 2 decks, I'd probably say go with 6 of a kind.

It's a great strategy game for the group.

    Also learned "Saboteurs":

My friends and I have been playing a game similar to this for years, we called it Deuces. Pretty much the same formula, except we didn't allow flushes or 2 pairs, just single cards, straights, pairs, 3 of a kind, full house, 4 of a kind and 5 of a kind, and we do the suits diamonds, hearts, clubs, spades. Very fun game! We've never done the trading of cards bit before, might have to try that to change things up.

Another game we play is Oh Hell!

Rules of Card Games: Oh Hell!

We do things different by starting with dealing just 1 card, then working our way up to the most available, depending on how many people are playing, then back to 1 for the end of the game. It gets pretty competitive.
