You can let your team just sit for awhile and not worry about it. It'll still be there, with the same stats and a pool of other player's teams to play against when you come back.

There are times when I'll pay more attention to it than others. You have to balance your lines out to get a point bonus, so you can't have all 3 forwards and 2 defensemen with the same "Speed" skill, etc... Managing your in-game money and Rep Points, drafting players, acquiring free agents, making sure your enforcers are trained up to win fights, etc... I'm having fun with it.
