This isn't a run and gun game, you'll run out of ammo too quickly especially if you don't use the V.A.T.S. targeting system and your weapon is in poor repair (lower damage rating).
Kill some fools and keep their hunting rifle or assault shotgun, those are my favorite weapons. One for distance, the other close combat. The .44 magnum is good as a last ditch/conserve ammo weapon.

Ok. I see. I just looked at the walkthroughs and you're right. I've been playing this game all wrong. Hopefully now when I play today I can enjoy this game. I really want to.

I just started with:
I think that adds up properly lol. started with small guns, lockpick and repair.
raised intelligence and agility off the bat to get more skill points and more VATS points.

Small guns or repair. I wouldn't really bother with melee at all, but that's just me.

I got so frustrated I traded back on goozex and picked Banjo Kazooie back up. It seems like a cool game, just couldn't get into it. Kicking butt building cars and copters though.

I started with Melee but died a lot. I would have started with small guns. You level up pretty quick at first, so you can mix and match as you go.

Melee is pretty worthless until you get either the Fisto! (special Power Fist) or a Deathclaw gauntlet (created weapon). When you look at the damage for the gauntlet, keep in mind that it ignores DR, so it works just as effectively against power-armored Enclase troops as it works against molerats. Just understand that a melee/unarmed build is going to take a lot of damage, so a high endurance/high strength (for power armor) is almost a necessity.

Every attack discipline (small/large guns, unarmed, melee) works in its own right. Some are more demanding than others, but each is totally viable. You just need to understand what each's weakness is, and then plan your other skills/stats around that.
Anybody get into Broken Steel yet? I'm loving the higher level cap and new enemies. The battle in the Presidential Metro is freakin intense. First time in the game that I had to do a battle like five times before I survived it.

I LOVED broken steal. It was awesome! I am now working my way around some of the other vaults...sad stories to say the least.
