do i have to play Fallout 1 and 2 or can i just dive in and not be totally confused?

From what i have read you don't have to. I have never played Fallout 1 or 2. And i plan on just jumping in.

I LOVE this game.
You don't need to have played the first two, ges, unless you want a sense of the theme/environment. They are both "classics," but honestly, I have problems trying to sit down and play those isometric-view turn-based RPGs for longer than half an hour or so at a time.
I think Bethesda did an incredible job of capturing the mode and grit of the Fallout world. I'm about 4-5 hours in and have just become completely wrapped up in some of the side quests and villages. Only problem I've run in to is running out of ammo and having NO melee skills (My career was Pip-Boy Programmer...I'm a tech/medical nerd).
Here's hoping that Deus Ex 3 does as good a job succeeding that franchise as this game has for Fallout. Must own.

Yea Duke, it's been a blast so far, just got it today.
I saved a game right before hitting wasteland so I can go back and get different skills if needed but that Baseball Bat has come in handy so far.

Any other tips? I am going to get my copy copy tomorrow! I was thinking about locking pick, hacking and some form of ass kicking...
What do you all recommend?
