Thread: Gamers Next Move: YOU DECIDE!

In the spirit of Christmas, I am breaking the rule I set for my husband years ago.

What's the rule, you ask?
Well, Mr. Ruely (a.k.a. NaysayClone) is a sick gamer. For years we would buy a game the day it came out for $60 and he would have it beat at the hardest level within 10 days (only exception being the Final Fantasy series). After the Project Snowblind fiasco of 2005, I put my foot down and told him no more new games until they move to Greatest Hits ($20).

Well, I'm overwhelmed by the Christmas Spirit (oh, and Im done with Halo... I need something else to do...) and am willing to buy him two video games for FULL PRICE (you dont realize, knowing they will be beat by New Years, this is a serious compromise for me).

I've heard so many great things about so many games that its hard to narrow down options. Also, I want to try to buy the best 'bang for the buck' games so its worth the price to me.

So, I come to you LGK Gamers.

What should my Gamers next plays be?

If he likes first person shooters at all then he will love Call of Duty 4. Every single person who has played it loves it. Ask Orange Puck, he's been loving the game so far.

As much as I LOVE Gears of War and Call of Duty 4 that list is not complete without BioShock. If I were forced to pick only 2 of those 3 games I don't know what I would do.

Oh, and you should let hubby buy used games on eBay. It's better than having to wait so long for a game to get to Greatest Hits and you can score some great deals. I got BioShock for only $40 shipped and it was brand new still sealed. I got a used copy of Forza 2 for only $20. Both these games still run $60 at the stores and are only 3 and 10 months old respectively.

Gears of War is a must own if you have the Xbox 360. It's in my Top 3 of all-time co-op video games just behind TMNT: The Arcade Game and Contra.

I have just started Mass Effect and absolutely love it so far. Seems to have the great depth of story and character that Bioware's other titles have shown (i.e. Knights of the Old Republic, Neverwinter Nights, etc...), while maintaining the illusion of a First-Person Shooter (much like Tabula Rasa tried to do).

I'll play the heretic and say I'm not a big fan of Gears of War. It is a great engine, and a great FPS, but I just don't feel it offers the depth of gameplay that I'm looking for in a game. Of course, if one is a hardcore FPS fan, it is a must-own.

FWIW, I've heard Assassin's Creed is a rent-first. It looks solid, but depending on your gaming interests, may not be what you expect of it. It's tops on my "Next to Try" list though.

Call of Duty 4 has a single player campaign with intel pieces that must be picked up to unlock new modes, and then achievements that must be unlocked not only on the regular difficulty setting but Veteran as well. When he is done with that he can move to the Multiplayer Online, 55 levels, he can create his own class, and then start over at level 1 for prestige, gaining new unlocks all the way! GREAT bang for your buck here.

Mass Effect-although all singleplayer this game is so deep it doesn't need multiplayer, 50 levels his first time through, then 10 more levels on the second runthrough, the ability to select your existing character for the second runthrough, a HUGE galaxy map with many systems to explore, upgrading of weapons and armor and the ability to play as a Paragon, Renegade, or combination of both further add to the replayability in this game.

Assassin's Creed is not even a consideration here, it's a rental game ONLY, once you have played for an hour or two you have seen everything there is to be seen. He will go through it way too fast.

Get all of them.
