Is there a lot of driving missions in ME2? And I've heard they toned down much of the rpg elements also. What did they take out/revamp?

No driving, at least not yet and I've probably played for like 15 hours. They replaced it with scanning planets from orbit and launching probes to mine for minerals. RPG is still the focus of the game by a long shot. You can now interrupt other people with Paragon or Renegade actions if you have enough points to do so. They also made the combat more intense.
They also changed the weapon/armor system. No longer do you have to buy individual weapons and upgrade them for each character. You upgrade weapons and armor tech and everyone in the squad gets them.
There also seem to be more options to have relationships with different characters, though I'm not sure exactly since I haven't even played through it once yet. What I'm wondering is if the game would behave differently if you imported your character from ME1 (I didn't). For example, ME2 is acting like I killed Wrex, sent Ashley to her death, and had a relationship with Alenko. I wonder if I didn't make those choices and imported my character if I would get a different experience.

I was pretty meh on ME1, so I was putting off getting ME2 for a bit. But everything I reading about it makes me think I will pick it up sooner rather than later now as it sounds like Bioware really improved things and made a great game.
I was hoping you could tell the game at the start what your choices in ME1 were if you didn't have your ME1 save file, but that doesn't sound like that's the case?
And I certainly won't miss the driving missions or the individual weapon/armor upgrade system.
The story was the best part of ME1 and it sounds like it just gets better and better in ME2.
I went on XBox Live last night and noticed more "friends" playing this game than Modern Warfare. I'm gonna have to check it out.
Only because it doesn't have multiplayer! It would be nice to have friends take control of squadmates instead of having to issue commands.
I don't think you *have* to play the first. Playing the first helps you understand some past events that are alluded to, but it's not necessary.
The first has a damn epic final battle. 'Epic' is a word tossed around pretty commonly these days( on the internet, at least ). The end of the first was really epic, though.
i am playing ME1 again - waiting for a good deal on ME2 to come up - i never did finish the downloadable content i purchased several months back anyways
I just got it today. Pretty cool game, it's like watching a sci-fi flick. Still getting used to the controls and the power wheel thingy.
MW2 suffered a huge blow with the purchase of ME2 by Rinkrat.
