Where NHL 07 was about faking out the goalie, NHL 08 is about embarrassing overzealous defensemen in one-on-one situations.

This new mechanic is a direct response to defenders checking forwards to the ice every single chance they got. In real hockey, a great puck-handler could lose a defenseman that overcommitted to a check.

It's a one-on-one matchup and the defender is bearing down on you. Moving the stick left or right won't help you because the defender is ready to knock you off the puck and on your duff. Quickly, you hold the left bumper, or L1 on the PS3, and tap the right stick up and to the right. Your player taps the puck past the defender to the right. At the same time, you skate to the left to avoid the big hit, grab the puck on the other side and continue the break. There are all kinds of stick combinations you can use to undress a defender and EA encourages you to get creative.

In NHL 08, the skating engine has been overhauled and you have complete analog control on the left stick, along with a ton of new skating animations to tie it all together.

Checking has been reworked, too, so that now every hit doesn't send a forward to the infirmary. No, the severity of the check will depend on the angle of the hit and the speed of both players.

That sounds awesome but I'd rather they fix the goalie AI problem. If I see another blue line wrister roll over Giguere's shoulder I'm gonna be pissed!

I'm pretty sure that's the first problem they addressed.

Sweetness. As long as they fix the ridiculous skating i'll be happy. I'm actually just kinda happy that they are listening to what the fans think is wrong and trying to fix that instead of bringing in all kinds of irrelevant front office stuff.

Dude, thats been an issue since NHL 98' at least. Jiggy and all the other goalies are gonna let in the long bombs sometimes.
... Geek points here but... I won the cup on a backwards chip shot from near the red line a couple years ago.

Sounds awesome! I wonder if they're going to release a version of this for the Wii... since that's the only next generation system I'll buy.
