my wife bought this xbox when it was released, so i believe the warranty has expired. i tried to register it online and set up a repair, but it kept saying the serial number was invalid. i'm thinking of just buying a new Arcade pack and use the old HDD. anyone know if that's possible? haven't really looked into it... im dying for some video game hockey action :(
Sorry to hear that.
But yes, you can just attach your previous hard drive and it'll work fine.
I bought my first Xbox 360 along with NHL 08 on Sept 07. I purchased a replacement plan with Best Buy though (60 bucks for 2 years). The system died on me like in April/May.
But when I returned the system, I didn't return the hard drive since I didn't want to lose my save files. They didn't notice, or didn't seem to care (since they looked at it). So when I got another 360 system, I just took off the new hard drive and put the old 20GB one on it.

You're welcome.

I bought one of the first Xbox 360's as well. Had the red ring a few months back and thought I would have to shell out big bucks to fix it since it was out of warranty, but then pleasantly found out that they had extended the warranty for everyone since so many were getting the red rings. You may still be under warranty!
Found a great guide for the EASHL, lots of great pointers:
