It's back to the drawing board for EA. I just hope they make a massive overhaul for next gen.

The truth of the matter is that they do put new features in every year, but most people have no conception of how long it takes to write software, much less relatively bug free software. Even something as simple as the new division organization can work out to months of person-hours by the time all the tasks are completed. It calls for schedule engine updates, playoff calculation and other rule engine updates, graphical changes, and the reorganization of fundamental app data which can have all sorts of cascading effects depending on how it was originally written. Add on a new enforcer engine, improvements to the true performance skating engine, one touch dekes, the integration of the collision engine from FIFA, AI improvements, a totally new Be A Pro mode, random bug fixes, plus the task of balancing all that stuff to keep gameplay challenging (aka. a cross crease pass doesn't equal a goal every time) and you've easily got yourself a year's worth of development time.

But if patience for the development process isn't enough to find the value in each successive release, let's break down some numbers. I bought NHL13 as a download for $59.99 shortly after it hit the marketplace last year. In Be A Pro mode alone, I've played just over three seasons at approximately 21 minutes per game, or roughly 91 hours total. That's $0.66 per hour of gameplay, and I still have a few more months to bring that down ever further before NHL 14 is released. Dirt cheap entertainment in 2013, and I'd happily plunk down another $60 for improvements to true performance skating, one touch dekes, and the new Be A Pro mode alone.
Good post Royal Subject, but I have to ask. Do you play online? Everything you described right there, is pretty much exploited online and EA has not bothered addressing these issues for a number of years. Instead, they come up with other ideas (like true skating, new fighting engine, etc) that does nothing to fix the actual exploits.

    You mentioned this as well...

Even EA can't get this right and that's mind boggling. When you're playing Be a Pro or Be A GM, every time it gets into the 2nd season and beyond... the scheduling is all screwed up. For years now, you just play 10 straight road games, then 5 straight home games, with 5 more road games, followed by 15 straight home games. I never quite understood how they don't know how to "fix it" still. When I play NBA or MLB games, they never have this problem. That right there alone, is why I think EA is lazy. They simply don't care.

Obviously, in the end. I'm the dummy for buying a new one year after year regardless of what I think about EA. But I totally agree with your statement here.

This is probably why I still shell out the cash every year. When I divide the $60 bucks I spent into all the games I have played online and offline on NHL 08, 09, 10, 11, 12 13 alone... it comes out to practically "free" entertainment.

While it seems like most of you are allergic to the "like" button, I just want to personally say thanks for looking anyway.

I don't want to quote all of Royal Subject's post, but I understand where you are coming from. However, there have been serious blunders for years that don't get fixed.
-same commentary for how long now? (Including names pronounced totally wrong e.g. Cop-e-ter)
    -curve shot
-BAP schedule, trade logic, et al
-same Stanley cup celebration for 5 years, really? The last 2k game had where you could skate with the cup and that was 3 or 4 years ago.
-real hockey plays are completely ineffective online. Especially now with the super goalies that save every beautifully setup play then allow weak wrist shots from the point consistently.

I could go on, but the list would be huge. I look forward to the FIFA engine and hope that makes the online midgets and giants get destroyed physically and slow as molasses, respectfully.
Yeah, I am going to buy it, mainly just for EASHL and I love hockey.

I don't play online. Just not into it. I play video games to relax. If I want to pit myself against another human in a non-physical contest, I'll do it at a poker table where I have the chance to make some money in the process.

I can see how some things that don't bother me as a single player would bother people who prefer to play online though. Sounds like EA should be spending more time balancing the exploits.

This actually brings up an interesting idea. What if EA went to an MMO model, ala WoW, instead of a yearly title model? Sure, it would change that dynamic of "practically free entertainment", but it could lend to better balance through more frequent updates than the current distribution model allows for. It could also potentially enable cross platform online gaming. (ie. play with your friend on a PS3/4 while you're on your xbox 360/1)

Xbox doesn't allow cross platform anymore.

I don't know how you can play hockey and be relaxed though, I don't have that ability.

Matching teams in their own divisions is good too.
