Thread: Old Xbox360/New Xbox360

My 2007 360 just crapped out (RRoD E73) and instead of getting it fixed, I'm just going to go buy a new one.

Few questions first:

1) Are the New 360 controllers the same as the old? Can I use the old ones with the new system?

2)My old system is the 120 gig HDD, the new one will be the 4 gig. All I have on the old system is game progress and Achievements. I dont have anything else on it. I didnt go online or anything. Should the 4 gig suffice?

2.5) Can I use the old 120gig HDD as a second drive using the Transfer Harness, on the new 360?

The controllers are the same. Actually they are minor cosmetic changes all 360 controllers will work on either system.

yeah. 4 gigs should be enough. If not, get a flash drive. I have 20GB and still have more than half.

I doubt you can use the old drive.

While we're on the subject, can I just an external hard drive with/on my xbox 360? I've got three of them, one being a terabyte, the other two are about 500 gigabytes a piece. No way I'll ever need all of that.

Ok...maybe someone can help...I got a 250gb hard drive for xbox. Unfortunately it is for the old school version and I have a slimline. Is there any way I can use this? If not, I already opened it, so P.Diddy, if you are out there, how much grief is Best Buy going to give me regarding returning this?

Well, before I gave up on the Old Xbox Elite 120 Gig, I decided to do a search on reparing the unit. I ran into a plethora of "Toothpick and Towel Fixes" that looked to be very stupid. Basically they want you to cook the inside of the unit to "re-seat" the bad solder joints. Pretty retarded if you ask me. So after an exhaustive search I found this:

...and tried it this afternoon...and it worked! Holy Crap! Took about 3 hours to do it but no more RRoD and it only cost about $28 worth of materials.

My daughter has been playing the 360 now for about 3 hours and not a single problem. Im stoked!

You CAN use an external HD but it's limited to 16GB.

Between the old and slim versions, the hard drives are physically the same inside their shells. You just need to remove the shell and swap as needed. There are slim hard drive shells all over eBay for under $20. I'm sure there are links all over Google for how to do the swap but you may need to be adventuous.

If you have a small amount of data to swap and an extra xbox, just swap proflies, data with a USB key. A large amount of data can be swapped using their $30 transfer cables.

Slightly off topic but other than Live Gaming, is there any other reason to have my XBox online? Netflix maybe but can I surf the web with the xbox? What else is there?

Besides what you mentioned... not much besides demos, etc. Live's the MS money-maker.
